A Pair of Career Milestones Notched as Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Farmingdale

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A dominant display by the Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team was not enough to overcome Farmingdale State as the Valiants were defeated 23-8 on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Valiants fell to 6-8 overall on the season and 2-2 in Skyline Conference play.

It was a busy first quarter as the Rams and Valiants went back-and-forth on the offensive front. Farmingdale's leading scorer of the game, Kyle Kolano, struck first getting his first of the night in the contest. Less than a minute later, Tyler Kollar would capitalize on the lead, adding an insurance goal to go up 2-0. Manhattanville then responded with one of their own from Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), his first goal of the night. Kollar continued his dominant performance for the Rams with another goal. As the Valiants' leading scorer, Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) contributed on the offensive front with a goal as the Rams led, 3-2. Swift would later tie it up, 3-3 at 3:13 with the game then staying scoreless through almost four minutes. An unassisted goal for Farmingdale's Adam Giovinco gave the Rams back the lead at 9:05. Later in a man up opportunity, Cornelia scored his second of the night to tie it up again. Farmingdale then scored four straight goals to close out the first 15 minutes of play. This first quarter performance would showcase the offensive dominance of both teams, scoring a combined 12 goals.

The intensity fizzled out during the second quarter with only six goals scored between the Valiants and Rams. Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) scored his first goal of the night to bring the score back within three. Three goals from Kollar and one from both Kolano and Michael Cassano gave Farmingdale a decent 13-5 lead with about three minutes to go in the half. Palladino would close out the quarter with another goal to head into halftime down, 13-6.

Kolano continued his hot streak on the night, scoring his fifth goal of the contest. It would then be a career milestone as Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) notched his 100th career point on a goal at 1:39 to cut the lead, 7-14. With time passing by, the Rams scored three goals to close out the third quarter with a pair from Kolano and one from Connor Murtha. Farmingdale would lead 17-7 going into the final 15 minutes of play.

The final quarter of regulation began with three straight goals for the Rams with a goal from Giovinco, Kollar, and Thomas Stock to take a 20-7 lead. It would be another career milestone with a Manhattanville goal dished out by Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) who recorded his 100th career point off a goal from James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Farmingdale responded in celebratory fashion with a trio of goals from Rob Varello and Anthony Martino to secure the win as the Valiants were defeated, 8-23.

In net, Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) split time for the Valiants. The starting netminder Ulzheimer recorded 11 saves on the night through 45 minutes, giving up 17 goals. Johnston came in to close out the contest through the final 15 minutes with six saves, allowing six goals.

Rookie Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) won a team-high nine faceoffs as Skyline Defensive Player of the Week, Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) added six draws.

Defensively, Tim Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) each collected a team-high five ground balls, while Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Padovani each caused a pair of turnovers.
