Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Matchup at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's lacrosse team was unable to get back in the win column, falling 15-10 to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Valiants drop to 5-9 overall on the season and 2-4 in Skyline Conference play with only a pair of contests remaining in the regular season.

The Knights took an early lead with a goal from Karlie Ferrucci at 2:44 as the Valiants would respond with one of their own from Colleen Gianna Mott (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) to tie it back up, 1-1. 14 seconds later, Colleen MacNeil (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) found the back of the net to give Manhattanville their first lead. Mount Saint Mary then tied it up with a goal from Erica Schmidgall. It would be a back-and-forth affair with MacNeil scoring again at 9:10 to regain an advantage. To close out the first quarter and begin the second, the Knights scored five straight goals to take a hefty 7-3 lead.

The Valiants clawed their way back with goals from Meghan DeBellis (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) before an insurance goal from Shannon McGowan to keep the Knights ahead, 8-5. MacNeil and DeBellis scored back-to-back prior to halftime closing the gap, only being down by one.

The Valiants and Knights traded goals through the third quarter with Schmidgall getting things started. DeBellis responded with one of her own as McGowan then found the back of the net. Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) scored her first and only goal of the day at 12:45, down 10-9. Mount Saint Mary's Victoria Ward scored to close out the quarter and capitalize on their lead.

Ward then began the final quarter of regulation with another goal to take a three-goal lead. Manhattanville's leading scorer of the contest, DeBellis would get her fourth of the day to bring the score back within two. The Knights then scored three straight goals to secure the win as the Valiants fall below Mount Saint Mary in the conference standings.

In net, Jacee Russello (Hope Valley, R.I./North Kingstown Senior) played a full 60 minutes, making seven saves while allowing 15 goals.

MacNeil led the team with 14 draw controls and four ground balls, as Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) had a team-high two caused turnovers.

The Valiants head to Long Island on Wednesday, Apr. 24 as they face off against Farmingdale State at 7 p.m.
