Game One Recap: Manhattanville 18, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (Five Innings)
Coming off a pair of no-hitters in Saturday's sweep of Sarah Lawrence,
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) flirted with the Manhattanville's third-straight no-no as she limited the Dolphins to just one hit in a dominating win to open the day's action.
Shinstine only allowed a single to Aaliyah Dejesus in the third but was able to navigate four walks and a hit batter to complete the shutout. The graduate pitcher struck out nine as she extended her shutout streak to 49 straight innings, lowering her ERA to 2.33 on the season.
While Shinstine did not need much in the form of run support, the red-hot Manhattanville bats continued to rake with 18 hits. Eleven different batters finished with a hit, led by
Sarah Harker's (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) career-game. The graduate outfielder hit for the cycle for the first time in her illustrious career and drove in seven runs while scoring three runs herself.
Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) delivered three hits, while
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) and
Amaya Esparza (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills) both finished with two.
Harker's day began with a two-run triple in the first to score Tansey and
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) with the game's first two runs. Esparza drove home Harker with an RBI single one batter later to spot the Valiants an early 3-0 lead.
The Valiants doubled the lead in the second with three more runs.
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) single-handedly manufactured the first, drawing a walk before stealing second and third and scoring on an error. Harker delivered again with a two-run double to bring home Tansey and Walsh tor the second time in as many innings.
After being held in check in the third inning, Manhattanville erupted for an eight-spot in the fourth. Brooks and Walsh each drove in a run with singles before Harker added two more with a bases-clearing single to expand the lead up to 10-0. Esparza doubled home Harker with the fifth run of the inning before the Valiants loaded the bags up with walks by
Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) and
Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary).
Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Esparza with the 12
th run, before Coleman scored on
Angelina Cruz' (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) fielder's choice. Manhattanville batted around, allowing Brooks to deliver her second RBI single of the inning to plate Lazur and go up 14-0.
Not quite finished, the Valiants used the long ball to plate four more in the fifth. Harker led off with a home run to complete the cycle, her fourth homer of the season. Cruz showed off her power later in the inning with a three run blast of her own, the second homer of the freshman's career, to cap off the offensive display.
