SCRANTON, Pa. – In a nonconference tilt, the hosting Pacers put up eight runs over the opening three innings as the Manhattanville University baseball team was dominated by Marywood on Thursday afternoon by a final of 20-0. With the loss, the Valiants fell to 14-17 overall on the season.
It was a rough day on the mound for the Valiants' pitchers as Billy Anema (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) was tagged for seven of the Pacers' runs in his start. He went 2.1 innings, striking out a team-high three batters while giving up nine hits as the Marywood bats got to him early. The Pacers scored a pair of runs in the first inning before scoring four more in the second.
Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) was the first reliever out of the pen for the Valiants, going 2.2 innings while allowing six runs on six hits. Unfortunately, the Pacers had more hits in their bats, scoring a pair in the third inning before piecing together another three runs in the fourth to jump ahead, 11-0.
Aiden Cardel (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) threw for the final three innings, collecting seven runs (five earned) on five hits. A quick four runs scored early in his outing during the sixth inning. In the seventh, another three runs were scored, bringing Marywood's lead to 20-0. The Pacers went hitless through their final at bats in the eighth.
It was a slow day for the Valiants as they found their most success at the plate from senior Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) who tallied a pair of hits, highlighted by a double in the second inning. Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) also recorded a hit during the contest. Â
The Valiants are back on their home diamond on Saturday, Apr. 27 with a conference doubleheader scheduled against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 12 p.m.
