Baseball Drops Non-Conference Affair Against John Jay

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University baseball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon to John Jay by a final of 5-1. The Valiants fall to 17-19 on the season with the loss.

Free passes doomed the Valiants on the mound as the pitching staff issues six walks. Despite allowing just five base hits total on the day, the free baserunners came around to bite Manhattanville as was the case in John Jay's three-run second inning. With two away, the Bloodhounds loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, allowing Ryan Cherichella to lace one up the middle and plate a pair of runs. Control issues continued as a hit batter and a third walk of the inning allowed Jaxen Gangwish to score the third run of the inning.

The three-run inning brought an early end to Chris Antonelli's (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) start, who went just 1.2 innings. He was charged with all three runs, giving up two hits while walking four and hitting another two batters.

Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) was the first reliever summoned out of the pen, giving a quality 5.1 innings. The freshman allowed two runs in his appearance on two hits and a pair of walks while striking out five.

John Jay added an insurance run an inning later on a Hayden Tackett sacrifice fly. Manhattanville would finally get to Alvy Grullon on the mound in the fourth as Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) led off with back-to-back singles to get something brewing. Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) delivered with a double to right to get the Valiants on the board, but the Bloodhounds avoided the big inning by throwing out a pair at the plate on fielder's choices before escaping the jam with a fly out.

That was all the Manhattanville bats could muster against Grullon, who allowed just six hits and the one run in his nine innings. Grullon struck out four en route to his second win of the season.

Gangwish added one more John Jay insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-1, where it would hold the rest of the way.

Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Valiants, allowing just one hit while striking out one.

Parisi finished as the lone Valiant with multiple hits in the game. On the basepaths, Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) swiped his fifth bag of the season.
