FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team saw their season come to a close on Saturday afternoon against Farmingdale State College in the Skyline Conference Championship Finals. With the 5-4 loss, the Valiants finish their 2024 campaign 10-5 overall, only a pair of conference losses coming from the Rams in the regular season and to close out the conference tournament.
Farmingdale would take a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles action. The Rams struck first in the No. 2 flight, as Alan Sabovic and Matthew Waterhouse bested
Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) and
Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus), 8-4.
Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) and
Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) logged themselves a battle at No. 3 doubles, with an 8-6 loss to Muhammad Sawar and Ty Williams. The Valiants then collected their first point of the match in the No. 1 doubles slot as
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) earned an 8-6 decision over Ryan Hendel and Vansh Aggarwal.
Manhattanville later tied the match up, winning the first singles match as Loganadan defeated Sawar, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles flight. Goodwin responded soon after earning a 6-1, 6-4 win over Hendel at No. 2 singles for a 3-2 lead.
Farmingdale battled back to take the next two singles slots as Hourihan was bested by Sabovic, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 1 flight before Hunter-Crump fell to Williams 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to give the Rams a 4-3 lead.
With the title hanging in the balance, Manhattanville's Guzman kept the match exciting with the first three-setter of the contest. At No. 6 singles, he defeated Matthew Olkhovetsky, 6-2 in the opening set, then giving up a 7-6 decision before coming back and winning 6-2 to even the score, 4-4.
The crown would be decided in the No. 3 singles match of Forberg and Aggarwal. After Manhattanville's Forberg took the opening set, 7-5, Aggarwal responded with a 6-4 second set victory. The final set was a back-and-forth battle resulting in a 6-4 finish for Aggarwal and Farmingdale emerging victorious, 5-4, to earn their second-straight conference championship.
The Rams will represent the Skyline Conference at the NCAA Tournament having secured the conference's automatic bid with the win. Farmingdale will learn of their opponent this coming week.
