Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener 1-0 at Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Coming up on the wrong end of a defensive battle to open up the year, the Manhattanville University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Drew on Friday night. The Valiants will carry a 0-1 record through the opening weekend of the season.

The deciding tally came in the 19th minute of play off the boot of Alexa Krause. The senior Ranger initially fired a pass into traffic that caromed off a Valiant defender. The ball made its way back to Krause who wasted little time getting a shot off into the center of the net that evaded Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford).

The scoreboard remained stagnant for the ensuing 71 minutes and change as the teams combined for nine total shots on net in the contest. Manhattanville was limited to just one shot on target in the opening half, an attempt from Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) that was swallowed up by Sarah Crowley in the 34th minute. The Rangers held an overall shot advantage of 7-4 through the opening 45 minutes, with four of their balls going on net.

Manhattanville was limited to four shot attempts in their comeback effort in the second half, getting a pair of balls to Crowley. The Ranger netminder was up to task, turning away a Castaneda header in the 48th minute and Alexandra Brauer's (Lake Grove, N.Y./St. John The Baptist Diocesan) first collegiate shot on goal in the 73rd to preserve the clean sheet.

In all, Castaneda led the Valiants with three of the team's eight total shots. Brauer finished with two shots, while Stephanie Sanchez (Rye, N.Y./The Masters School), Alicia Bibi (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Kailey Roxo (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) all ended the night with one.

Girard finished the night with five saves in a full 90 minutes in net. The junior netminder works her way towards 200 saves for career, sitting 12 shy following the end of Friday's action.

Drew held a 4-2 corner kick advantage. Fouls were fairly even, with nine whistles directed to the Valiants to eight for Drew.
