Men's Soccer Battles to 2-2 Draw Versus Potsdam in Cardinal Classic Finale

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's soccer team erased a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a draw in the final day of the 2024 Northwestern Mutual Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon, battling to a 2-2 final against SUNY Potsdam. The Valiants head home from Plattsburgh carrying a record of 0-1-1 through the opening weekend of the season.

After the Bears dispelled Baruch 3-0 yesterday, Potsdam put Manhattanville in a 1-0 hole in the first as Justin Mossey scored his first goal of the young season off an assist by Kyan Tiede 15 minutes in. The Valiants fared significantly better at generating offensive opportunities on Saturday than the day prior, firing 10 shots in the first half compared to the three total the team recorded all match on Friday against Plattsburgh. Despite outshooting the Bears 10-3 in the opening 45, including six shots on net, Manhattanville continued to trail heading into halftime.

The Valiants found the equalizer with the team's first goal of the year in the 53rd minute as Alec Pineda's (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) second career tally beat Bear keeper Lucas Schiel off a pass from Guido Saranga (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham). The score held steady for five and a half minutes before the Mossey and Tiede connection struck again in the 59th minute as Mossey's second reestablished Potsdam's lead.

Manhattanville responded in the 75th as Sarango notched his second assist of the afternoon, this time setting up Johnny Antolino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison). The junior's second career goal was enough to lead to the draw, as neither attack was able to find the netting across the final 15 minutes.

The Valiants finished with a 20-9 shot advantage, putting 11 balls on net. Griffin Van Cott (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) finished with a team-high 36 shots on goal in his 36 minutes off the bench. Mason Chetti (Ronkonoma, N.Y./Connetquot) and Jostyn Blanco (Norwalk, Conn./Brien Mcmahon High School) joined Van Cott with three total shot attempts for Manhattanville.

Graduate goalie Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) made his first appearance of 2024 for Manhattanville, earning the win with three saves across a full 90 minutes.

The Valiants took seven corner kicks compared to five by Potsdam.
