DANBURRY, CONN. – The Manhattanville University field hockey team earned their first win of the season on Wednesday evening against Western Connecticut State. The result of this contest led the Valiants to break their four-game cold streak, defeating the Wolves on the road, 1-0.
Sophomore Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored the only goal to give the Valiants their first win. Striking late in the second quarter, Guinan put the ball in the back of the cage with four minutes remaining in the first half, assisted by her cohort Taylor Benedetto (East Yaphank, N.Y./William Floyd).
The Valiants outshot WestConn 2-1 in the first quarter, but both teams were held scoreless across the first 15 minutes. Manhattanville also recorded two penalty corners while the Wolves had none.
The tally ultimately came during the following fifteen minutes in the second quarter. While the Wolves controlled the majority of scoring chances in the period outshooting the Valiants 5-1, it was quality over quantity for Manhattanville. The road team clicked in the 27th minute, leading to Guinan scoring past Wolves goalie Gracie Bomboy with their lone shot of the quater.
Opening the second half, WestConn and the Valiants shared three shots apiece in the third quarter. The Valiants continued to have the upper hand offensively as Manhattanville earned more corners, 3-2. The intensity continued to rise as the Valiants were assessed a pair of yellow cards in the quarter. Manhattanville survived being shorthanded, draining the clock on both penalties.
The majority of the final 15 minutes was held in the Valiants defensive end as they were outshot 2-0 and killing off a thrid yellow card penalty. The remaining fourth quarter minutes would tick down holding the score at 1-0, giving Manhattanville their first tally in the win column.
The Valiants tallied six total shots for the game with six players getting one apiece.
