PURCHASE, N.Y. – Opening up a three-game homestand in style, the Manhattanville University field hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak, blanking Albertus Magnus 3-0 on Monday afternoon. The Valiants climb to 2-6 on the year following the win.
Coming off Saturday's heartbreaking overtime loss at Morrisville, how the Valiants responded would go a long way to set the tone for the second half of the season. Â Ready to move on from the weekend's decision, Manhattanville shined on all sides of the field to earn their second shutout win of the year.
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) got the start in the cage for the Valiants, playing a scoreless three quarters while making a pair of saves.
Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) took care of business over the final 15 minutes for the combined shutout. For both goalkeepers, it was the first time in their collegiate careers they were involved in a shutout.
The Valiants dominated possession for the contest, outshooting the Falcons 17-6 on the day. Manhattanville fired all six shots of the opening quarter, and while none were able to find the back of the cage, the attack was on the verge of finding paydirt.
The pressure finally paid off in the 23
rd minute as a rapid succession of three-straight shots got the Valiants on the board. The offensive flurry started with a shot attempt by
Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) that was blocked away by a Falcon defender. The ball ended up on the stick of
Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who fired it on net for the Valiants' first shot on goal of the affair. While Albertus Magnus keeper Ella Welton was able to turn away the first attempt, the same could not be said of the rebound. The ball came to
Hannah Revell (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) on the doorstep of the cage who fired it home for the first goal of her collegiate career.
The Valiants came out of the halftime break determined to extend the lead, firing six more shots in the third. The result was a pair of insurance tallies that effectively put the game on ice. The first came with seven minutes remaining in the quarter as
Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) rifled in a centering attempt outside the circle. The pass perfectly navigated traffic to end up on the stick of
Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), quickly depositing the ball into the cage to put the Valiants up 2-0. The tally was Guinan's third in her last four games.
Not content with just an assist, Doherty added a goal of her own four and half minutes later, weaving her way through defenders before letting a shot rip that would account for her first goal of the season.
Penalty corners were evenly distributed, with six opportunities awarded to the Falcons and five to the Valiants.
