Men's Hockey Slain by No. 13/9 Red Dragons

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Playing their fifth game against a ranked opponent in the 2024-25 campaign, the Manhattanville University men's hockey team fell to the No. 13 USCHO / No. 9 DIIIHockeyNews Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday evening by a final of 6-2. The loss drops the Valiants to 3-8-1 on the year, now 0-7-0 this season away from the Playland Ice Casino as Cortland climbs to 9-5-0.

The Red Dragons dominated puck possession and offensive chances on the night, firing 47 shots on goal to Manhattanville's 22 as the Valiants fell for a sixth-straight game. Manhattanville did well to match up with one of the top teams in the nation in first period as both sides fired 11 pucks on net cross the opening 20 minutes. Cortland struck first at the 11:53 mark off a Devlin O'Kane shot from Robert Hyde and Anthony Bernardo. It took the Valiants only 85 seconds to respond when Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/New Hampshire Avalanche (EHL)), who has made a name for himself in setting up goals with 68 career assists entering play, found his way into the goal column off a helper from Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)). It was Mateichenko's third goal of the season, while Rogers brought his season point total up to 12 with his third assist of the campaign.

The Red Dragons reclaimed the lead with 1:12 left in the period following a Domenic Settimo goal from Brady Hildreth and Evan Beaudry. Cortland rode the momentum into a dominant second period, outshooting the Valiants 19-3 and adding four goals to their lead. Dino Mannetta, Johnny Facchini, Conor Humphery and Nate Berke each lit the lamp in the explosive period to knock the Valiants on their heels.

Cortland continued to control a majority of chances in the third, outshooting the Valiants 17-8 to close out the night, but Manhattanville would be the beneficiaries of the lone goal of the period. The Valiants scored on their first shot of the period as Zach Turner (Eagle, Colo./Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL)) notched his second tally of his rookie year at 1:41 off an assist from Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)), with the sophomore regaining sole possession as the team's point leader with 13 on the season following his seventh assist.

The Valiants were unable to do any further damage to Cortland's lead as Ronan Mobley finished with seven saves in the third, finishing with 20 stops total to improve to 8-1-0 on the season as the Red Dragons' leading netminder.

Tripp Clarke (Cazenovia, N.Y./Northern Cyclones (USPHL Premier)) saw his first action in the Valiant crease since Nov. 26 as he finished with 41 saves. It was the second-highest save total of the junior goaltender's career after he made 42 saves last February against Chatham.

Hoins had four shots to lead Manhattanville's offensive effort, while five different skaters—Mateichenko, Turner, Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)), Mitchell Watson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) and Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL))—fired two pucks on net each. Hoins was also the Valiants' top faceoff performer in the loss with eight draw victories as Cortland held a 33-28 advantage on the dot.

Neither team was able to find paydirt on the power play, as the Valiants finished 0-for-2 with one shot on the man advantage while Cortland went 0-for-3 with seven shots.
