Men’s Basketball Outlasted by Yeshiva in Overtime Affair

PURCHASE, N.Y. - After storming back in the second half down fifteen at the break, the Manhattanville University men's basketball team fell to visiting Yeshiva, 75-70, on Sunday afternoon. Needing the extra period, the Maccabees used the final five minutes to hold off the red-hot rim attack. With the result, the Valiants slip to 5-8 overall, with a 1-3 mark in conference play.

Led by three scorers in double figures, John Ranaghan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield), and Emmanuel Udeagha (Yonkers, N.Y./Aduvie International School), Manhattanville surged in the second stanza, outscoring their counterparts 38-23 to tie the contest. Ranaghan led the scoring for the Valiants with 21 points, cashing in on four attempts from deep and grabbing six rebounds. Saint-Louis followed shortly behind with 20 of his own, also corralling six rebounds. The latter of the three Udeagha, finished with a double-double, tallying ten points and eleven rebounds.

The contest was near even in the opening ten minutes, equally trading blows. As the score sat evened at 11-all, the Macs would embark on a 29-14 run to close out the first half, doing their damage from the charity stripe, converting on 9-of-11 attempts from the line. The Valiants hung with the Macs with back-to-back layups from Udeagha and Saint-Louis, but Max Zakheim caught fire, notching ten of the 29 points during the twelve-minute run. Yeshiva finished the quarter with a fifteen-point lead, as the Macs held a 45-30 margin into the half.

Similar to the first half, both teams were dead-even as the half began, matching each other's offensive output 20-20 11:17 into the second twenty minutes. Over the next eleven minutes, the Valiants would uncork an 18-5 run, silencing the Maccabees with four strokes from downtown, eventually tying the contest at 63-63 with just over two minutes to play. The trio of Ranaghan, Saint-Louis, and Udeagha led with six points from the first two, also getting help from Carlos Urena (Corona, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) off the bench with four points of his own. The Valiants flexed their muscles from deep, as Manhattanville went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc during the stretch. Neither team could find the bottom of the basket in the final two minutes of regulation, leading the affair to an extra five minutes to decide the victor.

After once again trading baskets, Manhattanville was able to grab ahold of the lead for the first time in the contest, with a layup from Jack Scanlon (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River High School), seeing the contest sit at 67-65 with a few ticks under three minutes to play. The Macs would then step on the gas, finishing off the overtime period with a 10-3 run, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, seeing the final score show the Maccabees win, 75-70.
