PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University men's basketball team took the court in Kennedy Gymnasium this afternoon for another conference matchup. Taking on Maritime College in a tenacious game, the Privateers came out on top with a final score of 64-51. The Valiants overall record now stands at 6-11 and conference record of 2-6.
The Valiants had a quiet start to the first half with their first basket coming five minutes into the contest. With two back-to-back three-pointers from Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) and John Ranaghan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Manhattanville tied the contest quickly at 6-6. The Valiants took the lead for the first time at the 11:13 mark in the first half, 11-10. The game remained level for a majority of the first stanza. The Privateers went on a five-basket run to open the score with one interrupted basket from the Valiants to render the score, 23-13. Manhattanville continued to struggle finding a rhythm on offense going six and a half minutes without scoring. Ben Merritt drilled a three-pointer to leave the Valiants at a low first half score of 16 points compared to Maritimes 34.
Maritime led the charge with significant numbers to close out the first half. The privateers shot with a 44.8 field goal percentage compared to the Valiants 18.2 percent. Manhattanville was 6-for-33 from the field while Maritime was 13-for-29 in the first 20 minutes of play. Both teams were neck-and-neck when it came to offensive and defensive totaling 24 for the Privateers and 20 for the Valiants.
Manhattanville started the second stanza with the offensive advantage in the first few minutes. Ranaghan and Daniel Marinaccio (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea) drilled two three-pointers to help push their scoring over the Privateers, 8-4. Jack Scanlon (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River High School) was the first valiant to the free throw line all game bringing the score to 40-25. The score remained stagnant for an extensive three minutes before Tyler Anderson for Maritime dropped two free throws to extend the lead, 44-26. Manhattanville and the Privateers continued to trade points for the remainder of the second half. While their improved offensive efforts were not enough, bringing the final score to 64-51.
The point differential for the second was very slim with Manhattanville outshooting Maritime, 35-30. The Valiants dropped six shots outside the arc compared to the Privateers one and they led the charge in field goal percentage with 35.5 percent in comparison to Maritimes 34.5 percent.
Saint-Louis led the pack with ten points. Ranaghan and Carlos Urena (Corona, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) each had nine and Scanlon added five to the mix.
The Valiants shared more rebounding responsibilities this time around with Ranaghan and Scanlon each taking five and Andrew Melillo (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Marinaccio and Saint-Louis each taking four.
