OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – For the second year in a row, the Manhattanville University women's basketball team broke the program record for the most points scored in a single game as the Valiants offense erupted in a 110-23 victory over Old Westbury on Tuesday night. Manhattanville improves to 8-3 overall (5-2 Skyline) with the dominating performance, while the Panthers remain winless as 0-12 (0-7 Skyline) on the season.
Tuesday's scoring output surpasses the team's previous record of 106 points which also came against Old Westbury on Jan. 27, 2024. It was far and away the Valiants' best offensive performance of the season, as Manhattanville entered the night averaging 63 points per game and having scored more than 70 points just once with their 77-point effort on Nov. 26 against Saint Joseph's Brooklyn. The performance also ranks 16
th across all of Division III in points scored by a team in a single game this season.
The Valiants rewrote a few more sections of the program record book, also breaking the record for most field goals and assists in a game. Manhattanville connected on 46 shots from the field, two more than the previous single-game high set against Baruch on Nov. 20, 2018 and versus Bard in the 1978-79 season. Manhattanville's 35 assists surpasses the prior high of 32 (at Old Westbury, Dec. 21, 2013), while the 14 three-pointers matches the program record from last year's record-setting performance against the Panthers.
There was no shortage of performances to highlight, with
Taylor Malone (Yonkers, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) and
Madison Carlo (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) shattering their career-highs as the Valiants' leading scorers. Malone went off for 25 points, shooting .714 (10-for-14) from the field. The sophomore was lethal from beyond the arc, shooting 5-of-8 from deep, as she added three assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Carlo was just as impressive as she put 22 points up on the board on a 9-for-14 display (.643), hitting four of her eight shot attempts from deep. The rookie added a pair of takeaways, two assists and a rebound to her totals on the night.
Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) also reached double-figures, scoring 18 in just 12 minutes on the floor. The team's leading scorer on the season shot 78 percent, going 3-for-5 from deep, to post double digits for the eighth time this season.
Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) and
Cascia Sandoval (San Antonio, Texas/Harlandale) scored nine points each to round out the team's leading scorers. It was rookie Sandoval's highest point production of the season, while Ramos put on a show in her 13 minutes on the floor with seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Kaitlyn Mangan's (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) 10 assists led the Valiants on the night, with the freshman also providing seven rebounds to match Ramos.
Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) and
Gwen Merrifield (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional High School) added five boards apiece, while
Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) dished out five assists and
Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had five takeaways as everyone played a role in the win.
The Valiants held Old Westbury to just 23 points, the fewest surrendered by Manhattanville since holding Pratt to 21 back in 2022. The Panthers shot .265 on the night and .153 in the first half, allowing the Valiants to run away with things quickly. Debrocky opened the night with a three pointer on the Valiants' opening possession, which was responded to by a layup from the Panthers' Brianne Belizaire going the other way. That would be the last of the Panther offense for a while as Manhattanville went on a 27-0 run over the next six minutes to lead 30-2.
The Valiants carried a 30-point lead into the second quarter and were far from done, outscoring Old Westbury 30-3 in the quarter. Manhattanville ended the half on a 22-0 run, carrying a 64-7 lead into the locker room.
Even with gigantic lead, Manhattanville refused to make things easy for the Panthers in the second half. Purchase was held to nine and seven points in the third and fourth quarters respectively as Manhattanville outscored OW 46-16 in the second half to cap off the historic night. Carlo officially set the new record with a layup with 2:34 left in regulation to score the Valiants' 107
th point of the night, with
Ryan Ford (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) adding a free throw and Malone providing one last floater to push Manhattanville to the 110-23 victory.
