PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team secured its third-consecutive berth into the Skyline Conference Championship Finals on Wednesday afternoon as the second-seeded Valiants defeated No. 3 Saint Joseph's Long Island, 4-0. The Valiants advance to Saturday's championship, taking on top-seeded Farmingdale for the title.
Manhattanville swept all three doubles flights to open the postseason on a high note.
Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and
Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) got the Valiants started with a 6-0 win over Morgan Wind and Rose Ruopoli in No. 2s.
Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and
Bianca Reyna (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) then earned the Valiants the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on the No. 3 court against Amanda Andree and Kayla Mansfield. Before action could be halted to transition over to singles play,
Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and
Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) put the finishing touches on a 6-3 win of their own over Natalie Kopala and Victoria Corcoran on the show court.
Needing just three singles wins to advance to the finals, the Ortiz twins and Lalman obliged by taking care of business on courts 2, 3 and 4. Amaya was the first to finish up play after a 6-0, 6-1 win over Corcoran in the No. 2 flight. Soon after, her sister wrapped up a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Andree on court No. 3. That brought the attention over to the No. 4 flight, where Lalman took the first set over Mansfield, 6-0. Continuing her unblemished singles record, the rookie improved to 11-0 on the year in solos by winning the second set 6-3 and setting up a Saturday afternoon date with the Rams for a title bout.
Filippelli trailed Kopala in the top flight, dropping the first set 6-7 (10-12) and falling behind 1-2 in the second before Lalman called match. Gutierrez won her own opening set breaker on No. 5s against Wind, 7-6 (7-5), and was down 2-0 when the match drew to a close. Reyna fell to Rupoli in the first set in No. 6s, 4-6, and held a 4-3 lead in the second.
