Women's Volleyball Sweeps Old Westbury in Eighth-Straight Victory

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's volleyball team closed out the penultimate week of its regular season on Thursday evening with a three-set sweep of Old Westbury. The Valiants extend its winning streak up to eight, improving to 15-7 overall and 9-0 in the Skyline Conference.

Aurea Obradors' (Barcelona, Spain/Benjamin Franklin International School) career-high ten kills led the Valiant attack effort alongside Caylin Caballero (Eastvale, Calif./Walnut). The freshman Caballero reached double figures for the 14th time this season, and trails only Loren Hernandez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) offensively this year. On the topic of Hernandez, she added six more terminations to her team-leading 266 putaways.

Kayla Jennings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) notched 20 digs in the three-setter while logging six aces for the third time this season. Hernandez dug eight balls, while Samantha Andriola (Garden City South, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) had five digs to go with her 11 assists. Alana Rivera Torres (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista de Guaynabo) provided 18 assists in her leading setter performance.

The Panthers got out to an early 4-2 lead before the Valiants rattled off five straight to take the lead. Stephanie Maser put a halt to the run for a moment, but Manhattanville scored 12 unanswered points to take a commanding 19-5 advantage, led by three aces from Andriola and three Caballero kills. Hernandez put an end to the opening set by bookending a 4-1 run with a pair of putaways to win 25-11.

The second set was more evenly matched as the teams battled to ten separate tied scores through 12-12. Hernandez delivered the tying kill that began a 5-0 Manhattanville run that shifted momentum in favor of the Valiants. Up 18-15, Manhattanville scored another five straight points with kills from Caballero, Obradors and Emily Brown (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) leading the charge. The Panthers prolonged the set with the next two points before a Brown kill and Sofia Napolitano (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) ace gave the Vals the 25-17 win.

Manhattanville hit a match-high .364 to close out the night, breaking things open with a 9-1 run to take a 10-3 lead. Old Westbury would not piece together a run longer than two points over the entirety of the set with the Valiants using a 6-0 run to further the lead up to 20-8. Leading 22-11, a Cassidy Fallon (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) kill coupled with a Panther set and attack error gave Manhattanville its sixth-straight 3-0 win with the 25-11 third set finale.
