Women's Hockey Falls in Opening Weekend Finale at Curry

CANTON, MASS. – Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) netted the Valiants' first goal of the season and Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite) put forth her second-straight phenomenal effort in the crease as the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was defeated in its season-opening series finale at Curry by a final of 3-1. Manhattanville drops to 0-2-0 on the young campaign, while the Colonels are off to a 2-0-0 start.

After an impressive 40 saves in yesterday's season opener, Cimorelli outdid herself with 44 stops on Saturday. The sophomore goaltender turned away 11 shots in the first and 12 in the second before standing on her head with a 21-save scoreless third period to keep the Valiants within striking distance.

As was the case in yesterday's matchup, a health shot advantage in favor of Curry eventually broke through the Manhattanville defense to find the back of the net. The Colonels outshot Manhattanville 47-23 on the night, opening with a 13-5 advantage in the first period. The result was a pair of first period Curry goals with Darby Marshall scoring 13:48 into the opening frame before Grace Inoue followed suit 1:36 later.

The Valiants recorded the first goal of the new season 5:38 into the second. After Kailyn McIntyre was sent off for slashing to give Manhattanville its first power play opportunity of the night, Mackinnon cashed in on the team's second shot with the player advantage, beating Coriann Hoag for the junior's third collegiate goal.

Curry got the goal back four minutes later off the stick of Kylie Harrison with what would prove to be the final tally over the final 30-plus minutes of play.

The Valiants did get their fair share of chances, sending the power play unit onto the ice seven times in the contest. Manhattanville was unable to replicate the success found on its first power play, going 0-for-6 to end the affair with seven total shot attempts. Curry also maintained possession in the closing period, outshooting Manhattanville 21-9 across the final 20 minutes.

Kayla Leonard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield High School), Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards), Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) and Abby Mellen (Rockport, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon / Vermont Academy / East Coast Wizards) logged three shots apiece to lead Manhattanville's attack effort.

In addition to her goal, Mackinnon led the Valiants on the draw with 16 faceoff wins. The Valiants held a 30-27 advantage on the dot in the loss.
