RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team grabbed its second road, first conference victory of the season, 68–56 over Mount Saint Vincent, Wednesday night in Peter Jay Sharp Center.
The Valiants held the lead the whole game, moving to 2-2 (1-0) while the Dolphins fall to 1-2 (0-1).
Three seniors fronted the scoring efforts for the winning team, with Julie DeBrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) reaching 18, followed closely by Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) with 17 and Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) with 14. The seniors recorded 49 of the team's 68 points.
Manhattanville capitalized on turnovers, forcing Mount Saint Vincent to lose possession 33 times. Orlando and Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) led the night in steals with five apiece.
Manhattanville started the game with an 11-4 run, eight coming from Orlando, with a combined 5-for-6 from the field. The early lead was cut to one with a series of missed shots from the Vals, which allowed the home team to go on a 6-0 run, bringing the score to 11-10. With almost two minutes without net contact, the Valiants jumped out ahead to wrap the first quarter up 20-15.
The second quarter opened with a three from UMSV to bring the game within two immediately followed by a layup from freshman Molly Russom (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) bringing back out the comfort five. A scoring drought affecting both programs for just under three minutes (2:48) was broken by a jumper from the Dolphins, and the score reached 24-21 with 4:50 left in the first half.
The first half of gameplay was wrapped with threes from Orlando and Charlotte March (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee High School) followed by Russom knocking down two free throws to secure the 32-23 lead going to the locker rooms.
UMSV came out of halftime hot, going on an 11-5 run in the first four minutes (3:56) of the third quarter, bringing the score within three. Manhattanville bounced back with Ramos finding her way to the basket and securing the and-one point, followed by a three from DeBrocky to push back out by nine.
With just under two minutes (1:59) remaining in the third quarter, the Valiants pushed to outscore the Dolphins 7-6, securing the ten-point lead going into the final ten minutes.
The fourth quarter started with back-to-back threes from Orlando and DeBrocky. The Dolphins followed with a 6-0 run over the next 1:28 before being snapped by Ramos, pushing her way through the paint for another two.
Ramos found her way to the foul line three times in the final two minutes of the game, sinking 6-of-7 on the night. DeBrocky wrapped scoring for the Valiants, sinking four free throws and going 5-for-5 throughout the game.
The Valiants will remain on the road, heading to Farmingdale 2-1 (1-0 SKY) on Saturday, Nov 22, for a noon tipoff.
