NAZARETH, N.Y. - In the final contest of the 24-25 regular-season, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was dropped by their ranked counterparts, the Nazareth Golden Flyers, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Tim Horton's Iceplex. With the loss the Valiants wrapped the campaign with an overall record of 7-16-2, holding a 5-7-0 mark in conference play.
Following the result, the Valiants clinched their spot in the UCHC Women's Championship Tournament, holding the No. 3 seed, traveling up to familiar territory to take on the second-seeded Pioneers on Mar. 1.
The Golden Flyers grabbed the lead early in the first period and did not look back, as Allie Zack finished off a feed from Sami Quackenbush and Alexis Kindred at the 04:06 mark, taking the 1-0 margin. Nazareth were able to register two man advantage opportunities in the period, but the Valiant penalty kill was able to squander both chances.
In the second stanza, the Golden Flyers were able to strike again by using their power play unit, as the duo of Zack and Quackenbush would combine again for the score, giving Nazareth a two-goal lead.
As the third period was under way, Nazareth would once again have an opportunity to cushion their lead with a man advantage, doing so from the stick of Julia Holmes six second into the time with the extra skater, putting the Golden Flyers ahead 3-0, 02:53 into the third period. Manhattanville would net a consolation goal halfway through the period, as Danika Aubin (Guy, Alberta, Canada/Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL)) connected with Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), firing the puck past the Golden Flyers goaltender to put the final score at 3-1.
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite) got the nod in the net for the Valiants, turning away 37 shots sent her way. The freshman crossed the 500 save mark on the season, sitting at 510 and holding the fifth spot for the Valiants single-season saves leaderboard.
Weisbeck and Taylor Willoughby (Camrose, Alberta, Canada/John Maland) led Manhattanville in the shots department, with five and three apiece respectively.
The Golden Flyers outclassed the Valiants on the dot, winning 33 compared to the Valiants 21. Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) paced in faceoff wins with twelve.
