ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University men's hockey team completed the series against Nazareth University this evening with a 4-3 win. The Golden Flyers held the upper hand leading into the third period 2-1. The Valiants ultimately struck back tying at the end of regulation which led to an overtime win to complete the contest. With these results, their overall standings are pushed to 8-12-1 overall and 7-8-1 in conference play.
Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/New Hampshire Avalanche (EHL)) was the hero, scoring the game-winning goal for the Valiants 3:01 into the overtime period to send the Valiants back home with a pair of conference wins to hold firm in third place in the UCHC standings.
The Valiants faced an uphill battle to even get to overtime as Nazareth carried a 3-1 advantage into the final two minutes of regulation. Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) was pulled out of the crease in favor of an extra attacker with 2:06 left to go. The added traffic paid off as Mitchell Watson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) slotted in a goal at the 18:32 mark to bring the score up to 3-2. With five seconds remaining in regulation, Elijah Devereaux (Webster, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) blasted the puck past the Golden Flyers goaltender to tie up the contest, 3-3.
Manhattanville was first on the board this evening with Devereaux drilling not just the first goal of the game but his first of the contest in the opening stanza. Nazareth responded just about two minutes later to level the score, 1-1.
The Golden Flyers pulled in front during the second period at the 15:32 mark with a goal from Nate Mann to take the lead. Growing the score differential even further, Cole Bauman netted the third and final goal for the Golden Flyers before the Valiants took control over the ice.
Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) led the squad in shots for the contest. Justin Fernet (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Taft School), Jack Cullen (Trumbull, Conn./Charlotte Rush (USPHL)) and Devereaux each had four shots a piece to take the top spots for the Valiants.
Woods played the entire game protecting Manhattanville's net this evening , making 25 saves.
Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)) tallied ten faceoff wins and Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) earned seven for the contest.
