PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshmen
Madison Carlo (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and
Kathleen O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) combined for 32 points to lead the Manhattanville University women's basketball team over neighbor Purchase College on Saturday afternoon as the Valiants took down the Panthers 80-30.
Manhattanville (14-5, 11-4 Skyline) went on a 28-0 run across the first and second quarter to firmly take control of the contest and shot better than 50 percent in the first half to handle the Panthers (4-17, 3-13 Skyline). Winners of three-straight, the Valiants move into third place in the conference standings past Saint Joseph's Long Island after the Golden Eagles' loss to USMMA today.
Carlo was stellar from deep, hitting five of her six three-point attempts to do the heavy lifting in her 17-point outing. It was the most threes that the rookie had hit in a single game this season, with her offensive output her second highest in a game behind her 22 points against Old Westbury on Jan. 7. Carlo added three rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist.
Carlo's classmate O'Mara set a new personal best with 15 points. It was O'Mara's sixth game in double-figures as she drilled six of her ten attempts from the field while hitting all three free throw tries. O'Mara's seven steals and four rebounds paced the Valiants, with the board total matched by
Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) and
Kaitlyn Mangan (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield).
Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) led Manhattanville with six assists, adding four steals, three rebounds and eight points in her busy 23 minutes all over the floor.
Leading 6-5 to open the game, Manhattanville scored 18-straight points to close out the quarter to take a commanding 24-5 advantage. The Vals connected on 53 percent of their shots in the first, includina 43 percent clip from deep. Manhattanville hit eight field goals to begin pulling away, with the Panthers attempting only eight shots total in the quarter.
The run continued deep into the second quarter as Manhattanville scored ten-straight points over the first four minutes. Purchase snapped a scoreless drought of 12 minutes with a free throw, but the Valiants had already built out a 29-point advantage while the Panthers searched for any offensive breakthrough. Purchase did not hit a field goal until 2:10 was left in the half as Manhattanville outcored the home team 22-5 in the quarter, shooting 53 percent again, to lead 46-10 at the break.
The Valiants outscored the Panthers 34-20 over the second half to close out the victory, improving to 24-0 all-time against Purchase.
