PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team dropped a late night battle with the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday night, falling to the Leopards by a final of 17-10. The Valiants suffer their sixth-straight loss with the defeat, dropping to 1-6 overall on the year.
Despite their arrival to campus being delayed by traffic, the Leopards were anything but slow off the bus as WIT outscored the Valiants 6-2 in the opening quarter to build out a lead that held over the duration of the night. Gabe Cobham and Richard Roy struck first for Wentworth to spot the visitors an early 2-0 lead. The Valiants were able to tie things up on goals from Don Janavey and
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) at the 7:50 mark, but it was all Leopards for the remainder of the quarter. Wentworth scored four times over the final seven minutes, getting tallies from Cobham, Tyler Longo, Jared Hiller and Jake Caraluzzi to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
The Leopards continued the run with three goals to open up the second as Erik Vogt, Drew Bouley and Longo stretched the lead up to 9-2.
Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) put an end to Wentworth's 7-0 run with his seventh goal of the season with 5:22 left in the half. The Valiants ended the second hot as Swift and Larkin both struck in the closing minute to bring the halftime deficit to 9-5.
Dylan Foley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and
Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) picked up the assists on the pair of tallies.
Despite working to get the game back into reach in the tailend of the half, the Valiants were done in by a 5-1 Leopard scoring margin in the third quarter. WIT scored the first three goals of the second half to erase the work Manhattanville did over the final five minutes of the period prior, and while Corace brought the Valiants back within six off an assist by Swift, two more Leopard goals furthered the gap as Wentworth carried a 14-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Brendan Kroll and Vogt stretched the Leopard run into the fourth to put WIT up a match-high 10 goals with 12 minutes left to play. Manhattanville went on to outscore Wentworth 4-1 over the final 9:13 of regulation. Foley, Janavey, Larkin and Corace each found the back of the cage as the game wound down to bring the final score to 17-10. Swift added two assists in the closing run to finish with a team-high five points on the night, while Larkin picked up a helper to finish with four total points.
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) continued his great season on the draw, winning ten of his 15 faceoff attempts. The performance pushes him past 500 faceoff victories in his career.
Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) also added eight victories on the X.
The grad student Padovani also collected a team-leading seven groundballs, with Goldstein following in pursuit with three.
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and
Jarod Wilmoth (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) finished with two apiece.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 12 saves in the Valiant net.
