PURCHASE, N.Y. - Plating 24 runs over the two games, the Manhattanville University baseball team defeated John Jay in convincing fashion, taking game one by a score of 9-1 and outslugging the Bloodhounds in game two 15-7. With the two-game swing, the Valiants have won their last five of six games, sitting at an overall mark of 9-4.
Game One: Manhattanville 9, John Jay 1
Jake Warnock (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) twirled the best game of his young Valiant career, as the freshman went six innings striking out twelve batters, only allowing three hits with one earned run.
The bats followed suit, with Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) and Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) both turning in three hit outings. Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) rounded out the notable hitting performances with a 2-for-2 day adding on two RBIs.
Manhattanville was first to strike in game one, as the Valiants had runners on the corners with Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) doubling to left field for the first run of the inning. Roberts stepped up and subsequently produced a sacrifice fly to plate the second run.
The Valiants would get three more runs in the next time up to bat, with once again runners on first and third, as Branigan singled with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop, scoring the runner placed on third. Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) would swipe third base and then score from an errant throw by the backstop, putting the Valiants ahead 4-0. Roberts would drive in the runner on second for the third run of the inning and his second runner batted in.
In the bottom of the fourth, Branigan would bring in two more runs with a single over the head of the center fielder, bringing around the runners in scoring position for a 7-0 margin.
John Jay would score their only run of the first game in the top of the fifth inning, after a leadoff walk allowed the runner to make his way around and score from a fielding error by the third baseman, for a score of 7-1.
Manhattanville would get their final two runs of the contest in the bottom fifth, from a groundout that scored the runner 90 feet from home and a single to right center, for a 9-1 final score.
Game Two: Manhattanville 15, John Jay 7
John Jay gave the Valiants a scare early in the first inning, as two doubles to left center and right center gave the Bloodhounds a 2-0 lead after the top first.
Manhattanville would answer back an inning later in the bottom of second with a big five spot. The Valiants would load the bases with singles and walks, getting their first run of the contest with a bases-loaded walk. Archul then stepped up to the plate and delivered a bases clearing knock to left field, having the Valiants mount a 4-1 lead. Goohs was able to jump on the new Bloodhound pitcher to bring in Archul for the fifth run of the inning.
John Jay did not waver, quickly matching the run differential in the next top half of the inning. Santo Anzalone hit a big fly to left center for a two-run homer. The Bloodhounds would tie up the contest at five-all from a throwing error by the shortstop, making it a brand-new ball game.
Following a one-two-three inning, John Jay would grab ahold of the lead once again, with two bases-loaded walks for two runs, a 7-5 lead.
Manhattanville retook the lead next time up to bat, when Goohs hit a three-run home run to center field, having the Valiants leap right back into the lead 8-7.
The Valiants would put up a crooked seven spot in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring their seven runs on five hits, pushing their lead to 15-7, as that margin would hold until the final out having the Valiants take game two.
Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) earned the win after coming in at relief, pitching three and one third innings, allowing only two hits and no runs.
Goohs and Archul both registered five RBI outings, with Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) rounding out the offensive output with two RBIs.
