TEANECK, N.J. – The Manhattanville University baseball team dominated on the diamond on Friday, sweeping Yeshiva University in a doubleheader to open up Skyline Conference play. The Valiants scored 37 runs across the two games, improving to 12-5 on the year with the wins.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 7, Yeshiva 0
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) tossed a complete game shutout before the bats got to work in the later half of the game as Manhattanville took an early-morning Game One win.
The senior Osso pitched his first collegiate shutout to improve to 2-0 on the year. Looking to bounce back after getting roughed up for seven runs in 3.2 innings against John Jay on Saturday, Osso was masterful against the Maccabees, throwing seven innings and allowing just four hits and two walks. He matched his Manhattanville high of six strikeouts in the win, last reaching that punchout total on March 10, 2024 against King's.
Osso navigated early traffic on the basepaths after surrendering a pair of singles in the first, but was able to get an inning-ending double play to keep the game scoreless through the opening frame. He went on to retire the next seven batters he faced in order.
As Osso locked in, the Valiant bats were able to get him a lead in the fifth.
Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led off with a single and advanced up to third on a
Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) hit by pitch and stolen base, scoring the opening run on
CJ Archul's (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) sacrifice fly.
Brian Brezosky (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) added to the lead in the sixth, smacking a triple to center field to score
Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). While the 2-0 lead would be more than enough to nab the win the way Osso was pitching, Manhattanville blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Three straight walks to open up the frame put the Valiants in position to do some major damage.
Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) plated
Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) on a single to right before Branigan picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Archul. Brezosky again showed off his power and wheels with his second triple of the day to clear the bases, scoring
Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) and Branigan with the fifth and sixth runs.
Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Brezosky to trot home with the seventh run of the game.
The Valiants stole seven bases in the win, with Mezzaucella and Branigan both nabbing a pair.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 30, Yeshiva 2
After needing some time to wake up with the early morning starts in the opener, the Valiant bats were red-hot for Friday's finale, collecting 26 base hits as the team crossed home 30 times.
It is the second year in a row the Valiants hung 30 runs on the board, achieving the feat last March also against the Maccabees.
Manhattanville wasted little time getting going, scoring seven runs on six hits in the opening frame. The Valiants scored in six of the seven innings, including an eight-spot in the third and another seven runs scoring in the sixth.
Five different Valiants drove in three runs in the win. Osso traded his spot on the mound to man the hot corner, driving in three, while Mezzaucella, Caputo,
Mike Scozzafava (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) matched his RBI total at the plate. Scozzafava enjoyed himself his best career game at the dish, going 4-for-4 with a double for his first collegiate hits, adding three runs to his ledger.
Delgado went 3-for-4 at the plate, with two of his hits going for triples. Ambrosecchia and
Anthony Iazzetti (Tuxedo, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) each had a three-bagger, while Goohs, Osso and
Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) joined Scozzafava with doubles.
Astrologo, Goohs and Ambrosecchia each drove in a pair, with McDonald, Iazzetti, Clara, Mitchael Torres and
Anthony Peterson (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) collecting Manhattanville's other RBI in the lopsided win.
Of the 19 Valiants to record a plate appearance in the game, 17 ultimately came around the bases to score. Delgado matched Scozzafava's three runs for the team's high.
With run support a plenty, Manhattanville sent six different arms to the mount to get work.
Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) got the start and earned the win, going two innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three.
Sam Pines (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) was the first reliever to see action, tossing two frames of one-hit ball with three punchouts.
Max Krom (Southington, Conn./Southington) and
Kevin DeMilia (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) each provided a scoreless inning of work, while
Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) handled the seventh, allowing a run on one hit while striking out two.
