KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Getting into the action of conference play, the Manhattanville University women's lacrosse team was dismantled by Merchant Marine, 20-1, on Saturday morning for their second taste of conference play. With the result, the Valiants now reside at 2-5, still looking for their first win in conference play.
The Mariners were able to jump on the Valiants early in the contest, scoring eleven goals in the opening period of play. USMMA was able to add onto their lead in the second period, as they saw the halftime whistle blow with a score of 16-0.
USMMA tacked on four more goals in the second half before the Valiants could net a consolation goal from the stick of Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), scoring the Vals lone tally from a free-position attempt with five ticks on the clock. Merchant Marine would see to a 20-1 win as the final horn sounded.
Cabral and Elsa Haakonsen (Trumbull, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) paced the offensive output for Manhattanville, both registering one shot apiece.
Megan McDonald (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and Molly Sances (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) led in the ground ball category, with three and two, respectively. Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School) caused the most turnovers for the Valiants with two defensive efforts to her name.
McDonald spent all sixty minutes in the crease, turning away eight shots.
