MADISON, N.J. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team competed alongside the men's team this afternoon against FDU-Florham. The squads returned to the courts at Drew University, the women's team saw just a few days ago. The outcome was very different as the Valiants saw a clean sweep, winning 7-0 this time around.
Manhattanville attained the doubles point winning all three matches to lead 1-0. The matches finished in order with Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) resided on the No. 1 court. The pair notched a 6-1 win over Meliha Bektesevic and Paula Vanegas. Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) took over on the No. 2 court, defeating Lindsay Sperling and Ivonne Ambrosio Vargas, 6-1. One final court remained in doubles play as Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) subdued Giavana Caraccioli and Marilu Guzman in straight sets, 6-0.
Filippelli closed out her singles match first for Manhattanville competing against Vanegas. Filippelli secured the match 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 3 court. The following Valiants to finish was Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) who took place on the second flight for the competition. She defeated Ambrosio Vargas, 6-1, 6-0. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished just behind her twin sister on the No. 4 court, defeating Sperling 6-1, 6-2. At this point, Manhattanville leads 4-0 with three matches remaining. Doyle took residency on the No. 1 court this match where she saw more sets won from her opponent than any other Valiant this match. Doyle safely secured the win, defeating Bektesevic 6-4, 6-3. The final two Valiants still competing took over on No. 5 and No. 6 courts. Gutierrez was a force of nature defeating Giavana Caraccioli 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 5 flight. King was the final contender for Manhattanville as she bested Guzman 6-0, 6-0 to close out the entire match.
