Baseball Stumbles in Midweek Tilt Against Marywood

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Playing in the third game in two days, the Manhattanville University team fell in their midweek nonconference matchup against Marywood, 12-6, on Tuesday afternoon. With the result, the Valiants now sit at an even 14-14 record.

In the first inning, Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) kicked things off in a big way, hitting a towering three-run blast to right center field, giving the Valiants an early 3-0 lead.

Manhattanville used the bottom half of the second inning to add onto their lead, first reaching with a walk and then immediately swiping second base. Another walk allowed runners to be on first and second for Brian Brezosky (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland), driving in the baserunner in scoring position for the first run of the inning. Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) stepped to the plate and delivered a single to center field for the second run of the inning, putting the game at 5-0.

Marywood would answer back next time up, slicing into the Valiant lead. A first run coming from an RBI groundout to shortstop led to a double by Kuzior to right field would score the runner all the way from first. A subsequent single through the right side of the infield from McCain to drive in Kuzior placed the contest at 5-3.

The score of the game would eventually settle into a tie as Marywood evened the contest at five-all in the top of the fourth, having runners on second and third from back-to-back walks and stolen bases. An error by the Valiant hurler allowed the runner on third to score, as an errant pitch afterwards allowed another runner to come home, tying the contest at 5-5.

Marywood added on three more runs in the sixth inning from two singles and an error by the catcher, to push the score to 8-5 now in Pacer favor.

A bases loaded single later in the contest added on another run for Marywood, followed by a sacrifice fly for the second run of the inning.

Manhattanville would net a consolation run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Michael Torres (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) doubled to left field bringing the runner all the way around from first, for a 10-6 margin.

Marywood would add on two more runs in the eighth, seeing a final score of 12-6.

TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) got the start for the Valiants, pitching two scoreless innings, only allowing three baserunners.

Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Brezosky both turned into 2-for-2 days in the box, while Osso followed with a 2-for-4 performance.
