Softball Belts Seven Homers in Sweep of Mount Saint Vincent

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University softball team blasted seven home runs on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Mount Saint Vincent. The Valiants improve to 18-6 overall and 8-0 in Skyline Conference play with their 10th consecutive win.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 9, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants made short work in the opener, plating nine runs on 12 hits to win in five innings via run rule.

Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) feasted at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) also went 3-for-3 with a two-bagger, driving in a run and scoring once.

Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) and Angelina Cruz (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) provided the deep flies of the opener, with Coleman blasting a three-run homer in the third for her second blast of the season, while Cruz homered for a third-straight game, a two-run blast that was her fourth of the year.

The Valiants scratched out the first run of the day in the second as Reyer legged out an infield single with two away. Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) cashed in, lacing a triple to right center to spot the Valiants the lead.

The lone run was ultimately all that Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) would need in the circle as the senior tossed her second complete game shutout of the year. Mottoshiski scattered five hits over her five innings of work while striking out three. She did not allow a walk, her fourth outing this year where she did not issue a free pass. Mottoshiski climbs to 11-3 overall with the win, dropping her ERA on the year to 1.56.

The Valiants broke through in the third after Tansey led off with a double. She went on to swipe third while Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) drew a walk and stole second to take advantage of a napping defense. Cruz skied a ball out to right with the pair in scoring position that was dropped, allowing Tansey to score before Coleman blasted her three-run homer over the right field fence to put the Valiants up 5-0.

Tansey set the table again in the fourth with a lead off double, advancing to third on Olivia Fasce's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) sacrifice bunt. Walsh brought the left fielder home with a single back up the middle ahead of Cruz' deep play to put the Valiants up 8-0. Coleman continued to swing a hot bat with a double to right center, scoring on Reyer's RBI double with the ninth and final run of the game.

With the run rule win now in reach, Mottoshiski navigated a Dolphin single to put up her fifth scoreless frame, stranding the runner on first as she picked up the win for a seventh-consecutive start.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 19, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants kept on swinging while benefitting from Dolphin fielding miscues en route to their highest run total of the season to complete the sweep.

Manhattanville flexed their power with five homers in the game, as Tansey, Walsh, Reyer, Emma Foster (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) each muscled a ball over the fence.

Wilkendorf helped her own cause with her first home run of the season with her second complete game shutout of the week. After blanking Purchase on Tuesday, Wilkendorf shined again with five scoreless innings, giving up just four hits while striking out a season-high five. Like Mottoshiski before her, Wilkendorf peppered the strike zone, not allowing a single walk.

The Valiants collected 14 hits as the entire lineup got involved in the action. Reyer, Mottoshiski and Johanna Granillo (Reseda, Calif,/Cleveland) led the effort, each finishing 2-for-2 at the plate. Lianna Lara (Santa Clarita, Calif./Sierra Canyon School) added the only extra base hit that stayed in the park, a double in the fourth.
Manhattanville once again got the scoring started in the second. One-out singles by Mottoshiski and Reyer set the table. Lazur popped a ball into foul territory that both the Dolphin catcher and first baseman gave chase to. The ball was caught, but with home plate left unoccupied, Mottoshiski ran home on the shallowest of sacrifice flies. Foster and Tansey followed with back-to-back homers, Foster's two-run blast her second of the year and Tansey's solo shot her fourth.

Up 4-0, the Valiants went right back to work in the third. Walsh led off with her fourth homer of the season before Coleman collected her fourth ribbie of the afternoon with a single to plate Cruz. Reyer then joined in on the home run derby, a three-run shot that was her second of the year to put Manhattanville further ahead up 9-0.

Manhattanville blew the doors off in the fourth with a 10 run inning that saw six hits along with six Dolphin errors. The Valiants sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame and continued to take advantage of UMSV misplays. The big bop of the inning came from Wilkendorf's three-run homer as the Manhattanville carousel kept chugging along up to the 19-0 lead.

The Dolphins got a pair of hits off Wilkendorf in the fifth but could not break through as the Valiants earned a third-straight shutout win.
