Baseball Celebrates Senior Day Against Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Playing in their final home game, the Manhattanville University baseball team fell in both contests as they celebrated their senior day, 10-5 and 18-4, on Sunday afternoon. The Valiants now fall to an even 18-18 record, with an 8-8 mark in conference play.

In between games, the graduating seniors of the Manhattanville baseball team were recognized with a ceremony for their contributions to the program. Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep), Brian Brezosky (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland), Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas), Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), and Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) were among those honored on Sunday afternoon.

Game One: Manhattanville 5, Purchase 10 (7 Innings)

Purchase was able to put two on the board in the first-time batting, starting off the inning with a double and a single to put runners on second and third. A subsequent throwing error by the shortstop allowed two runs to cross the plate, for a 2-0 mark.

The Panthers would add one three more runs thanks to a bases clearing triple down the left field line, followed by a fourth in the top fourth from an RBI single to right field, seeing the score sit at 6-0 after four innings.

Manhattanville was finally able to get on the board, using a three hit inning and getting help from the counterparts with two errors to get within one run. A hit-by-pitch and single made way for the Valiants to score their first run of the game from a throwing error by the third baseman. Following that, a second error on the next batter by the third baseman again allowed the second run to score darting from third to home. Gillison put up two more runs with a double to the gap in right field, having the innings capped off by Osso's RBI single to center field, for the fifth run of the inning, 6-5.

Purchase swung the momentum back in their favor in a big way, scoring four runs on four hits. It was death by a thousand cuts for the Valiants, as the Panthers chipped away for single after single, eventually capping off the inning with a three RBI double pulled down the third base line, putting the score at 10-5.

White got the nod on the mound for the Valiants, tossing four and two thirds' innings.

Osso finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3 day in the box, followed by Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Gillison with two hits apiece.

Game Two: Manhattanville 4, Purchase 18 (7 Innings)

Purchase looked to carry the momentum from the first game of the day, striking early in the second tilt after getting runners on first and second. A single through the left side of the infield gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.

Manhattanville took their first lead of the day in the bottom half of the first, after back-to-back singles from Gillison and Michael Torres (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas). Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) would rip a base hit on the ground through the left side to tie things at one-all, leading to Torres swiping second and scoring from a throwing error by the third baseman, seeing Manhattanville lead 2-1.

The Valiants would add onto their lead next time up, as Ambrosecchia laced a leadoff double to right field, and eventually scoring a wild pitch, for a 3-1 mark.

Purchase then put up a massive 12-spot in the next time up to bat, doing so on 11 hits, putting the game out of reach for the Valiants at 13-3.

The Panthers added on five more runs over the remainder of the contest as the Valiants netted one, for a final score of 18-5.

Fuerst was tabbed with the loss, going two and two thirds' innings.

Gillison led the Valiant offense with three hits on four attempts, followed by Archul and Goohs with two hits each.
