Martin Collects 600th Career Win, 500th Manhattanville Victory in Sweep of Sarah Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Head Coach Dale Martin added two more accolades to his highly-esteemed career on Wednesday afternoon as the Manhattanville University softball team swept Sarah Lawrence in Skyline Conference doubleheader action. Martin reached his 500th victory at the helm of the Valiants in the Game One victory before earning the 600th career coaching win with the finale as the winningest coach in school history continues to make history 23 years into his remarkable career.

Martin's wins came on the heels of a pair of no-hitters from the Valiant pitching staffs. After Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) went the distance for her first individual no-no of her career in the opener, Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) and Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) combined to hold the Gryphons hitless in the finale, Manhattanville's second and third no-hitters of the year.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 8, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
Walsh mowed down the Sarah Lawrence batters, striking out a season-high 10 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The senior flirted with perfection, setting down the first 14 batters she faced in order. A two-out walk in the fifth would be the lone blemish on Walsh's line before roaring back for her tenth punchout of the day to complete the no-hitter.

It was the fourth no-hitter Walsh has been involved in, the first in which she was the only pitcher to toe the slab. It was also the third-straight year that Walsh has factored into a no-hitter against Sarah Lawrence, partnering with Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) '24 in combined efforts each of the past two seasons.

The Valiants offense quickly plated all eight runs across the first frame on four hits, a pair of errors and two walks. Walsh helped her own cause with an RBI triple that brought Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) home before scoring shortly after on a wild pitch. An Angelina Cruz (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) walk coupled with Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) and Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) getting hit by pitches loaded up the bases. A wild pitch brought home one, Julianna Catalano plated another on a double and Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) cleared the bases with a single aided by a Gryphon error in the outfield to go up 6-0.

Cady Sickler (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored Lazur on a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a dropped fly ball that put the home side ahead 8-0.

Manhattanville added one more hit, a Cruz single, across the next four frames while drawing five walks and two more reaching on hit-by-pitch. Fasce stole a pair of bases to bring her season total to 15 without being thrown out once.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 8, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
Mottoshiski got the start in the second contest and dominated, tossing three perfect innings to open play.

The senior arm went nine-up, nine-down to improve to 14-4 on the season. Mottoshiski struck out six of the nine batters she faced, getting her other three outs on weak dribblers.

Wilkendorf took over in the fourth, setting down the side in order in her first inning before navigating a walk and an error to complete the no-hitter in the fifth. It is the second time Mottoshiski and Wilkendorf combined for a no-hit effort, pulling off the feat last season against Sarah Lawrence. It was also Mottoshiski's second no-hitter of the year after her solo effort against Mount Saint Mary on Apr. 4.

Five runs came across to score in the opening frame on five hits. Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) led off with a double before scoring on Fasce's single. Fasce then swiped her first of two bags in the contest ahead of a Walsh double to center to put a pair in scoring position.

After Mottoshiski walked to load the bases, Coleman scored a pair on a double. Mottoshiski came home on Reyer's sac fly before Lazur closed out the first frame scoring with an RBI single up the middle to plate Coleman.

The Valiants tacked on one more in the second as Tansey led off again, drawing a walk, stealing second and scoring on a fielding error. Tansey would play another big role in the third after Lazur and Josie O'Leary (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) reached with back-to-back singles to open up the inning. Tansey collected her second hit of the game with a single to left that was booted around the outfield, allowing both runners to score and put the Valiants in margin of a run-rule victory.
