THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Amid a six-game skid, the Manhattanville University baseball team returned to Skyline Conference play against Maritime, falling in the Saturday morning doubleheader. The Valiants now slip to one game away from an even .500 record, at a mark of 12-11.
Game One: Manhattanville 5, Maritime 22
Manhattanville was able to capture the lead early in the top of the first after opening the first at-bat with a walk. A subsequent walk on the next batter allowed Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to drive in the Valiants first run of the contest with a single to right center, driving in the runner from scoring position.
Maritime was able to answer back instantly with the first batter, going yard to even things up at one-all. The Privateers took the lead later in that same inning with a single to center field and never relinquished it, leading 2-1 after the first.
Maritime would use the bottom of the second to score four runs on three hits, pushing the score to 6-1.
Manhattanville was able to claw its way back in the next time batting; after loading the bases on three straight batters, CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) was able to drive in a run from a fielder's choice for the first run of the inning. Aidan Rosario (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) drove in the second run of the inning, singling through the left side of the infield to slice into the built-up lead, 6-3.
The Privateers would eventually pull away from the Valiants doubling their run total in the next two innings, seeing the game sit at 13-3 after four.
The Valiants managed to put up two more runs in the top fifth, kickstarted by a Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) triple to left scoring the runner on first. He was driven in by Rosario for the Valiants final run of game one.
Maritime was able to capture the victory in game one, 22-5.
Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), Ambrosecchia, and Rosario all finished with two hits apiece.
Game Two: Manhattanville 5, Maritime 8
Maritime once again led off their half of the first inning with a home run, this time a two-run blast to right center for a 2-0 lead early in the game.
Manhattanville was able to half the lead when Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) led off the inning after being hit by a pitch and making his way to 90 feet from home plate. Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) grounded out to short but brought home the runner for a 2-1 margin.
In the top of the fourth, Manhattanville was able to grab their first lead since inning one of game one, with Goohs singling and advancing to second from a throwing error by the third baseman. Mezzaucella doubled to third base, driving in the runner in scoring position and tying the contest. Runners would be on second and third, making way for Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) to single to right center field to drive in both runners, establishing a 4-2 lead for the Valiants.
Maritime would put themselves in striking distance with another homer in the fifth inning to right field, making the score 4-3.
The Privateers would take the lead in the bottom sixth, with a single to centerfield, but a misplay by the center fielder would allow both runners on base to score, for a 5-4 lead.
Manhattanville would tie the contest next time up, with Goohs continuing his hot outing, doubling down the left field line to drive in the runner from first, having the contest sit at 5-5.
Maritime would get to reclaim the lead with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and not look back, getting a second run thanks to another bases loaded walk, putting the margin at 7-5.
A final RBI single in the bottom of the eight would put the game out of reach for the Valiants, having Maritime take game two, 8-5.
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) got the nod for game two, pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out two batters.
Ambrosecchia and Goohs both finished the second game with two hits each.
