BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Valiant bats came to life on Sunday afternoon, plating 25 total runs across 10 innings of action to sweep a pair of games against Saint Joseph's Brooklyn. The two run-rule victories improve Manhattanville's record 12-6 overall and 4-0 in Skyline Conference play.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 14, Saint Joseph's Brooklyn 0 (Five Innings)
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) continued her red-hot week, tossing three shutout innings while collecting three hits at the plate as Manhattanville made short work of the Bears, winning via run-rule in the fifth.
Mottoshiski scattered five hits across the three innings in the start, but was able to leave each runner that reached against her stranded. The senior struck out one without walking a batter.
Manhattanville was set down in order in the first, but the bats could only be silenced for so long, erupting for eight runs on five hits in the second. Leadoff walks from
Angelina Cruz (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) and
Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) set the table before Mottoshiski knocked one through the right side for the first run of the game.
Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) cleared the bases with a double that put the Valiants up 3-0. After
Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) walked, the Bears got the next two batters out, looking to limit the damage to just three runs.
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) had other plans, smacking a two-run triple.
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) brought her classmate home with a double before Cruz flipped the lineup over with the big blast, a two-run homer that quickly put Manhattanville up 8-0.
The Valiants went back on the offensive in the fourth, scoring four more runs on four hits.
Josie O'Leary (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) and Fasce led off with singles, with a Walsh walk loading the bases. Cruz drove in one on a sacrifice fly before Brooks plating a pair on a double. Reyer drove in the team's 12
th run two batters later with a single to score Brooks from third.
Johanna Granillo (Reseda, Calif,/Cleveland) and Lazur drove in Manhattanville's final runs of the opener in the fifth with a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) tossed the final two innings, allowing just one hit in the fifth while walking a pair in her outing.
Fasce joined Mottoshiski with a three-hit effort, scoring a team-high three runs along with Walsh. Mottoshiski was the fourth Valiant to hit a double in the win, while O'Leary and Fasce added a steal each on the basepaths.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 11, Saint Joseph's Brooklyn 1 (Five Innings)
The Valiants kept on hitting to close out the day, collecting 14 more hits en route to a second run-rule win on the day.
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) wasted little time, depositing the ball over the outfield fence with a leadoff blast, her third homer of the year. The Bears got an unearned run in the bottom half to tie things up for the moment, but the Valiants retook the lead with a three-run second frame.
A Brooks single and Mottoshiski double put a pair in scoring position to lead off the inning. Reyer plated Brooks with a single.
Emma Foster (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) had productive outs, picking up an RBI each with a ground out and a sacrifice fly to put the Valiants up 4-1.
That was more than enough run support the way Mottoshiski was dealing in the circle for Game Two. Two days removed from her no-hitter against Mount Saint Mary, she allowed just one hit in her second appearance of the day. The only other blemish against her line outside of the unearned run in the first was a walk, while the senior punched out two to improve to 8-3 on the year.
Fasce picked up an RBI with a single in the fourth but the Valiants did their big damage in the fifth, plating six more runs on five hits. Cruz hit a lead-off single and Brooks followed with a double. Mottoshiski once again found the hole on the right side of the infield to bring home both runners. The Valiants loaded up the bases on an error and a walk, allowing Foster to clear the bags with a three-run double. She later scored on a Tansey sacrifice fly, putting the Valiants up 11-1.
With the run-rule now in effect, Mottoshiski closed out the win in the bottom half with a apir of groundouts and a pop up.
With her effort at the plate in the finale, Mottoshiski went 6-for-6 on the day with three RBI and three runs scored. Getting her first at bats of the season this week, the senior is batting .636 across 11 plate appearances.
Brooks also had a three-hit outing in the finale, hitting a pair of doubles. Reyer added her first stolen base of the season.
