Women's Tennis Gets 2025 Started with Skyline Win Over Yeshiva

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team began play for the 2025 season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Skyline rival Yeshiva by a score of 6-1. The Valiants have now won each of its last three season openers as Manhattanville sets out on a bid for a third-consecutive Skyline Championship appearance.

The Maccabees claimed the first of the three doubles matches as Manhattanville's Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) fell to Sarah Grunseid and Eliana Tilem 6-3 in the No. 3 flight, but the Valiants took the remaining duos contests to snag the opening point of the match. Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) downed Sarah Schewitz and Anna Laufer 6-2 on the No. 2 court before Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) took care of business on the show court, winning 6-4 over Micka Mimoun and Rina Pollock to put the Valiants ahead entering singles play.

Manhattanville took five of the six singles flights to wrap up the season-opening victory. The Ortiz twins secured matching 6-1, 6-1 wins in their draws, with Amaya besting Pollock in the top flight and Addison defeating Laufer in No. 3s. Filippelli defeated Mimoun 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 action while Lalman bested Gabrielle Resnick in the No. 4 showdown, 6-3, 6-2. Gutierrez was locked in a marathon against Schewitz, ultimately outlasting the sophomore 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Yeshiva would earn a point by winning the No. 6 flight as Grant was bested by Gruinseid, 3-6, 4-6.
