Men's Tennis Takes Third at 2025 Union College Garnet Cup

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team took to the courts for the first time in 2025 on Saturday, competing in the Garnet Cup hosted by Union College. After falling to the host Garnet Chargers in the tournament's opening round, the Valiants finished third overall with a 7-0 victory over Hartford in the consolation match.

Match One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Union 6
Union began its march to the inaugural Garnet Cup title by taking down Manhattanville in the tournament's opening round. The Valiants fell in all three doubles matches, with Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) and Thomas Jouanneau (Luneville, France/Lycee Arago) falling to Union's top pairing of Arhan Gupta and Jesus Sosa, 4-6. Elouan Charretteur (Fontainebleau, France/Lycée International Francois Premier 1er) and Sami Badre-Hume (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) dropped the No. 2 tilt to Vivaan Gupta and Simon Philip, 2-6, while Robert Zomer () and Nicholas Gervasi (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Epsom College) were toppled by Christian Vrowder and Daniel Saxe, 1-6.

Jouanneau earned Manhattanville's lone point of the match, outlasting Sosa in a three-setter in No. 1s. After dropping the first set 5-7, the graduate transfer won the second 6-2 before winning the breaker, 10-6.

The Garnet Chargers cleaned up in the remaining singles flights to bounce the Valiants into the consolation bracket. Charretteur fell to Gupta 4-6, 3-6 in No. 2s, while Guzman fell to Philip 3-6, 0-6 in No. 3 play. Badre-Hume was bested in No. 4s by Saxe, 1-6, 0-6, while Zomer fell to Shreyas Kode (1-6, 0-6) and Gervasi was passed by Reilly Fowles (1-6, 3-6) in No. 5 and 6 action.

Match Two Recap: Manhattanville 7, Hartford 0
With Hartford dropping its first round match to Oneonta, the Hawks and Valiants met up to close out the day in the consolation matchup. It was all Manhattanville as the Valiants won all nine flights in a sweep victory for the first win of the season.

Jouanneau and Guzman teamed up again for No. 1s, defeating Max Poss and Jake Short 6-2. Charretteur and Badre-Hume blanked Anthony Pomares and Eli Benoit 6-0 in the No. 2 flight, while Zomer and Gervasi handled business in No. 3 play against Thomas Anderson and Jared Degruttola, 6-2.

The Valiants continued to roll through singles, winning all six flights for the sweep. Jouanneau defeated Poss 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in the top flight, while Charretteur outlasted Short, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 on the No. 2 court. Guzman picked up a 6-3, 6-1 No. 3s win over Pomares, while Badre-Hume won 6-1, 6-4 over Benoit in No. 4s. Gervasi defeated Degruttola 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 flight while Zomer completed the sweep by defeating Kamau Nicholas in No. 6 action, 6-1, 6-3.
