CORTLAND, N.Y. – Abby Kauffman (Hershey, Pa./Hershey / New Jersey Colonials) scored her second goal of the season and
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite) made 40 saves for a second straight day as the Manhattanville University women's hockey team dropped its series finale at RV/RV SUNY Cortland on Saturday, 3-1. Manhattanville drops to 2-9-1 on the season with the defeat.
The Red Dragons were relentless in the offensive zone, finishing the day with a 44-16 advantage in the shots on goal column. Sophomore goaltender Cimorelli did everything should could facing the Cortland offense for the second time in as many days, making 41 saves in the loss less than 24 hours after turning away 44 shots the day prior. Through 12 starts, Cimorelli has racked up 391 saves in the campaign and holds a 2.83 goals-against average.
Cimorelli held the Red Dragons in check through the first period, turning away all 12 shots fired in her direction, but Cortland broke through for three in the second to blow the game open. Kira Cook, Carlen Bertrand and Katie Mahoney all scored in a span of 8:18 as Cortland put 14 pucks on net in the second period.
Cortland continued to fire away with 18 more shots on goal in the third, but Cimorelli was up to task to turn them all away. Manhattanville got one back early in the third as Kauffman finished off a rebound off
Emilija Tučiūtė's (Vilnius, Lithuania/Ontario Hockey Academy) shot on goal 2:33 into the period for the former's second tally of the year and the latter's third apple of her freshman campaign.
Manhattanville was ultimately unable to build upon the goal, finishing with just three more shots on net across the final 17:27.
Colby Cantor (Norwell, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) logged three shots to lead Manhattanville's offensive effort, while the trio of Kauffmann,
Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes) and
Molly Sances (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) added a pair of shots each.
Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School),
Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) and
Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) aided their goalkeeper with three blocked shots apiece, while Mackinnon also served as one of Manhattanville's leading faceoff presences with eight victories. Her draw total was matched by
Claire Hazard (Barnstable, Mass./Worcester Academy) who set a new personal-best with the performance.
Just four penalties in total were assessed in the contest, with Manhattanville unable to capitalize on three power play chances, being held scoreless on two shots. The Valiants killed off their lone shorthanded situation in the third period.
