PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire for a second time in as many games to improve to 10-0 in Skyline Conference play with Thursday night's 78-47 win over Yeshiva University. The Valiants now stand at 12-3 overall at the halfway mark of the conference season, while the Maccabees drop to 1-14 (0-10 SKY).
Manhattanville emptied the bench as all 13 players on the roster saw playing time in the victory, with 12 ending the night with a point. The offense was led by double-figures from four of the starting five, combining for 49 of the Valiants' points.
Julie DeBrocky's (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) 14 led the team and was her best offensive output since scoring 15 in the Dec. 6 win over Five Towns.
Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) also put up her top scoring performance of the new year with 13, adding a season-high five steals.
Kathleen O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and
Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) finished with 11 apiece to round out the leading scorers.
Manhattanville out rebounded Yeshiva 48-36, with the Valiant bench pieces leading the battle of the boards.
Kaitlyn Mangan (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and
Maia Velazquez (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) finished with a team-high seven rebounds a piece, career high marks for both. O'Mara added another six across her 23 minutes of play, developing into a dominating presence off the glass since her return to the starting lineup on Jan. 6, tallying 37 rebounds in the four-game stretch.
Velazquez added five steals, while
Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led the Valiants with four assists. The trio of DeBrocky, Mangan and
Molly Russom (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) added three assists each.
The Valiants were off and running with a 15-0 run to open the night, led by five points from DeBrocky. Manhattanville shot 52 percent in the opening quarter, including a 2-ofr-2 mark from deep en route to an explosive 31-point frame. The home side's early lead peaked at 23 with a 27-4 advantage through the opening 7:18, ultimately holding the 31-9 lead heading into quarter number two.
The Valiants cruised through the rest of the night with the sizeable score discrepancy, holding a 17-12 scoring advantage in the second to take a 48-21 lead into the locker room. Despite the final score, Yeshiva played solid ball across the second and third quarter, shooting at a 55 percent clip and outscoring the Valiants 16-14 in the third.
Manhattanville put the game to bed by outscoring the Maccabees 16-10 in the fourth. Eight different players recorded a point over the final ten minutes.
