OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – A buzzer-beating three-pointer capped off a ten-point comeback by host Old Westbury as the Panthers handed the Manhattanville University men's basketball team a heartbreaker of a loss on Thursday night, 66-65. The loss moves the Valiants to 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the Skyline Conference.
With the game tied at 63-63,
Chris Robinson (Bedford-Stuyvesant, N.Y./Westminster School) weaved through traffic with the go-ahead layup with five seconds remaining. Old Westbury quickly inbounded and got down the floor as Jermaine King Jr. let it fly from deep and drained the three with 0.9 seconds left after video review. Manhattanville's final prayer fell short as the Panthers capped off the win after trailing by double digits at halftime.
John Ranaghan's (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) 16 points paced the Valiant offense, his third-highest point total in a game this season. The junior shot 60 percent from the field and added three assists with two rebounds.
Isiah Middleton (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) put up 12 for Manhattanville, aided by a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe. Robinson and
Antonio Del Vescovo (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) added ten points each, a new career high for Del Vescovo.
Daniel Marinaccio (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea) earned a team-leading five rebounds while scoring nine points on a trio of three-pointers. Robinson,
Carlos Urena (Corona, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and
Jack Maloney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) came down with four boards each as Old Westbury held a 41-32 rebound advantage off the glass. Robinson and Urena combined for 11 total assists, recording six and five, respectively.
The Valiants shot 56 percent in the first half to build the lead through the opening 20. Despite Manhattanville's precision from the floor, it would take until the final five minutes of the half for the visitors to get the separation. The teams tied the score five separate times, with Old Westbury breaking the 22-22 deadlock with a 9-2 run to go up 31-24 with 5:10 remaining. From there, it was all Valiants as Manhattanville ended the half with 17 unanswered points to flip the game on its head. Ranaghan provided the spark with eight points in the run while Middleton provided six and Marinaccio the final three as the Valiants hit five of their final six field goal tries of the half to come roaring back.
While Manhattanville was still able to hit from short in the second with a .423 clip from the field, a 1-for-7 mark from deep and an identical success rate at the free throw line left the door open for Old Westbury to erase the deficit. The Panthers hit four three pointers in the second, making it a brand new game as the clock dipped below six minutes as Ahmad Sackor capped off a 7-0 Panther run to tie the game at 52-52. Manhattanville would go back up by five before Old Westbury evened it up again at 63-63 with 33 seconds to go ahead of the closing drama.
