Men's Hockey Upended by Second Half Albertus Magnus Surge

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Four different goal scorers wasn't enough for the Manhattanville University men's hockey team on Friday night as the Valiants fell in a 6-4 offensive eruption at Albertus Magnus. The Valiants fall to 3-14-1 with the loss and now stand at 2-7-0 in UCHC play.

It was all Valiants through the first half of the game as Manhattanville scored three times in the first period and took a 4-0 advantage seven minutes into the second. Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) opened the scoring 6:34 after the opening puck drop with an unassisted goal, his third of the season. The Valiants went on to capitalize on Albertus' first penalty of the game, a charging penalty that gave Manhattanville five minutes with a man advantage. With the defensive zone widened up, the Valiants scored twice on the extended power play, with Caden Eaton (Indian River, Mich./Cornwall Colts (CCHL)) scoring from Hoins at 13:16 before Tristan D'Elia (West Chester, Pa./Philadelphia Little Flyers (EHL)) finished up a feed from Lucas Baksay (Fairfield, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) 1:10 later to put the visitors up by three at the end of the first.

Just under seven minutes into the second, Beau Depencier (Dresden, Ontario, Canada/LKCS) continued to build on Manhattanville's momentum with his first collegiate tally from Brett LoGelfo (Long Island, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) to spot the Valiants a 4-0 lead.

The Valiants were able to chase the Falcons' starting goaltender Chace Hale after the fourth goal as Caleb Chabot came on in relief off the bench. The freshman goalie provided the necessary stability for Albertus Magnus, holding the Valiants scoreless on 13 shots across the final 33 minutes of play.

With Chabot shutting the door on the opposite end of the ice, the Falcons began to mount the comeback, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the second. Albertus went on find success on the power play themselves, scoring a pair of goals at 1:27 and 14:10 in the third to erase Manhattanville's four-goal lead and make it a brand new game with 5:50 left to play.

As the ice tilted with their own four unanswered goals, the Falcons completed the rise from the dead as Sam Lozinski scored 34 seconds after the game got tied up to go ahead 5-4. Suddenly finding themselves behind, the Valiants fired five shots at Chabot in the closing minutes but could not find an opening in the net. Albertus put the game to bed with an empty netter in the closing minute to pull off the stunning comeback.

William Billequey (Montreal, Quebec/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) made 36 saves for the Valiants in the loss. The junior made a game-high 16 saves in the second period.

In all, the Falcons outshot Manhattanville 42-29. Hoins led the Valiant offensive effort with four shots, while four other players—D'Elia, Baksay, LoGelfo and Jack Cullen (Trumbull, Conn./Charlotte Rush (USPHL))—finished with three.

Albertus also won the battle of the draw, 40-32. Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)) won 16 draws to lead Manhattanville.
