MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Manhattanville University men's hockey team hit the road on Tuesday evening for a midweek match up against Salve Regina University, battling through three periods before ultimately falling 5–1 at the hands of the Seahawks.
The Valiants came out sharp to open the contest, setting the tempo early and generating offensive pressure from the opening face off. Manhattanville broke through midway through the first period when Jack Roberts (Middlefield, CT/Lyman Hall) scored his sixth goal of the season at even strength at 7:04, finishing a strong sequence created by Beau Depencier (Dresden, Ontario, Canada/LKCS) and Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) to give the Valiants a 1–0 lead.
Manhattanville continued to push in the opening frame, creating additional chances from Hoins, Corey Popowcer (Parkland, Fla./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)), Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)), and Brandon Paluszak (Powell, Ohio/Gilmour Academy). On the defensive end, William Billequey (Montreal, Quebec/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) was steady between the pipes, turning aside multiple Salve Regina chances to help the Valiants carry their one-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Salve Regina responded in the second period, tying the game at 8:34 following sustained pressure in the offensive zone. The middle frame featured a physical edge and several special teams opportunities, as Manhattanville earned multiple power plays but was unable to regain the lead. Billequey continued to deliver timely saves, keeping the contest locked at 1–1 heading into the third.
The Seahawks gained momentum early in the final period, scoring just 17 seconds in to take their first lead of the night before adding another even-strength goal at 2:56. Manhattanville continued to compete and generate looks from McKenna, Depencier, Popowcer, Jack Cullen (Trumbull, Conn./Charlotte Rush (USPHL)), Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)), and Zach Turner (Eagle, Colo./Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL)), but Salve Regina capitalized on special teams and transition chances, adding a power-play goal at 9:06 and a short-handed tally at 14:14 to seal the result.
