PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville University women's volleyball hosted its conference home opener with a dominant 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's Brooklyn on Wednesday evening in Kennedy gymnasium. The Valiants (4-5) start off Skyline play 1-0 while the Bears fall to 4-6 (0-1 SKY).
Ava Callaghan (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) dominated on the court sending down 14 kills and three aces while adding on one block assist. Kayla Jennings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) laid it out on defense with 14 digs, also recording two aces.
Alana Torres-Rivera sent out 21 assists through the three sets while Eva Becerra (West Covina, Calif./Walnut) sent out the second-most with 11.
SET ONE – MVL 25, SJBK 14
Callaghan got the match started with her first of many kills. After the back-and-forth to start the Valiants added five straight to slowly become unreachable for the Bears.
After the bears benefited from an attack error, the Vals went on a 8-1 run to get within three of the first set. A kill from Caylin Caballero (Eastvale, Calif./Walnut) along with two attack errors from SJBK secured the first set 25-14.
SET TWO – MVL 25, SJBK 12
The visitors grabbed two points to start set two before back-to-back kills by Cassidy Fallon (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) ignited a 10-3 run for the Valiants. The home team racked up seven kills in ten points to jolt ahead 20-9.
Callaghan sent down two followed by Monika Gojcaj (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) with one and an ace from Fallon to put the score at 24-11. After an attack attempt went over the benches, the Valiants took set two 25-12.
SET THREE – MVL 25, SJBK 21
The Bears posted a threat in the beginning of the final set, keeping the match within two until the Valiants took a slim 18-14 lead. After the away team brought the match back within two at 22-20, the Valiants took advantage of a failed attack before kills from Fallon and Amelia Morrison (Avon, Conn./Avon) sealed the conference opening victory 25-21.
