NEW YORK, N.Y. – Amanda Orlando's (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) season-high 19 led four scorers in double figures to guide the Manhattanville University women's basketball team to a ninth-straight victory on Wednesday night, defeating Yeshiva 67-49. The Valiants continue to run through the Skyline Conference, improving to 15-0 in conference play while moving to 17-3 overall.
Orlando shot 57 percent from the floor (8-of-14) while going 3-for-6 at the free throw line en route to her season-best offensive output. It was the senior's highest point total since her freshman season when she scored 22 against Saint Joseph's Long Island on Feb. 18, 2023. Orlando also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win.
Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook),
Julie DeBrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and
Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) joined their senior classmate in double-figures. Tucker and DeBrocky scored 12 points each, with Tucker adding a team-high eight assists along with six rebounds, two steals and a block in a full 40 minutes. DeBrocky, meanwhile, paced the Valiants off the glass with eight rebounds and added two assists. Ramos scored 11 with her three rebounds.
Madison Carlo (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) hit a pair of shots from beyond the arc, and while
Kathleen O'Mara's (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) streak of games in double figures offensively ended at three, the sophomore had seven rebounds, seven steals, four assists and two blocks in her performance.
The Valiants scored 14 straight points to open the night as the Maccabees missed their first five shots and turned the ball over nine times in the first seven minutes. Despite the game getting off to the furthest from an ideal start, Yeshiva scored the final six points of the quarter to cut into the Manhattanville lead.
After going 0-for-5 from deep in the first quarter, Yeshiva shot 3-of-7 on three-point tries to keep pace with Manhattanville in the second. Ramos and Orlando hit short range baskets to open the new quarter's scoring to put the Valiants back up by 12. Manhattanville's first half lead reached a high of 14 on a DeBrocky three with 5:48 remaining. Both teams scored 14 in the quarter, sending the Valiants into the locker room up 28-20.
Manhattanville's offense got into a rhythm in the second half, shooting 52 percent after being held to a 35 percent rate in the first. A layup from Orlando followed by DeBrocky's second three-pointer opened the third quarter for the Valiants.
Kaitlyn Mangan (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) stretched the lead to 15 at 46-31 with 3:59 left ahead of nearly three minutes of scoreless action. Tucker ended the cold spell with a pair of free throws as Manhattanville led 51-36 entering the fourth.
The Valiants held Yeshiva to four total field goals in the fourth to close out the win. Carlo opened the quarter with a trey, with Manhattanville's lead never falling below 14. The Vals lead by as many as 21, outscoring the Maccabees by three to close out the 18-point win.
