CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Manhattanville University swept Washington College on Sunday in the first meeting between the two programs in 22 years as the Valiants completed their weekend in Maryland. Outscoring the Shorewomen 17-1 on the day, Manhattanville improved to 8-6 on the season and will carry a winning record back to Purchase for their home opener next weekend.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 8, Washington 1
Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) allowed just one hit across five innings while the Valiant bats recorded a season-high 12 hits to pick up the win in the opener.
The Valiants logged five extra base hits to begin the day, with
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) hitting a pair of doubles while
Emma Foster (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and
Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) added a two-bagger each.
Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) blasted Manhattanville's first home run of the season, a three-run homer that capped off a four-run third.
Wilkendorf retired the first eight batters she faced before allowing a two-out single in the third. It would be the only baserunner to reach against the junior, who picked up her fifth win of the season with five shutout innings. Wilkendorf struck out two and kept the ball out of the air, forcing seven ground outs.
The Valiants spotted their starter a lead before she stepped in the circle as
Emma Foster (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) continues to demonstrate patience and a great eye at the plate with a leadoff walk. She stole second and advanced to third on a ground out, allowing Tansey to pick up her first of her three RBI in the contest on a sacrifice fly.
Manhattanville greeted Washington's new pitcher Emmie Meeks with four runs on four hits and an error in her first inning of relief in the third.
Josie O'Leary (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) started the rally with a one-out but single before stealing second and scoring on an error. The misplay in the field extended the inning, allowing
Angelina Cruz (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) to reach on a fielder's choice and Lazur doubling to put a pair of for Reyer, who deposited the ball over the right field fence to put the Valiants up 5-0.
Tansey tacked on another run in the fourth with an RBI double to plate Foster. The Valiants added two more in the sixth with a pair of run-scoring doubles off the bats of Foster and Tansey to push the Valiant lead up to 8-0.
Hyli De Los Santos (Tustin, Calif./Irvine) closed out the game with the final two innings of work, allowing one run on three hits and a pair of walks.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 9, Washington 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants earned its fifth run-rule victory of the season in the finale, plating nine runs on 10 more hits as Wilkendorf once again shut down the Shorewomen offense.
The junior went right back to work with another five scoreless innings, showing a touch more vulnerability with two hits and a walk allowed while striking out another two. With the two scoreless outings on Sunday, Wilkendorf's ERA dips back below two at 1.80 on the season as she moves to 6-3 on the season.
Manhattanville once again wasted little time helping their pitcher out, scratching out two runs in the first. Foster and O'Leary led off with a pair of bunt singles ahead of a double steal to have a pair in scoring position with nobody away. Cruz brought home Foster on a fielder's choice before
Johanna Granillo (Reseda, Calif./Cleveland) plated O'Leary with a sacrifice fly.
The table-setter Foster got things started in the third with a leadoff single, then stealing second and third. The sophomore scored on an error that allowed O'Leary to reach, scoring four batters later alongside Tansey on a two-run Reyer single that put Manhattanville up 5-0.
The Valiants got into run-rule range with a four-run fifth, doing the damage on four hits and Washington's third error of the game. After a Cruz walk and Granillo single set up the inning, both came around to score on the error off the bat of Reyer.
Ruby Wilson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) brought the shortstop home from second with a single, and after the Shorewomen retired the next two batters to almost get out of the inning, Foster delivered the final blow with a double to bring home Wilson with the Valiants' ninth run.
Needing to score twice to extend the game, Washington got a pair on with a leadoff single and a one-out walk. Facing her most traffic on the bases since escaping a jam in the third, Wilkendorf got the next two batters to ground out to close out the win.
Foster stole four bases in the game to tie Manhattanville's single game record, the fourth time the feat had been accomplished. She joins Trina Ramsdell (Mar. 9, 2008) and Jayleen Torres (Apr. 5, 2023 & Apr. 16, 2023) as the lone Valiants with four steals in a game. O'Leary joined her in the record book, becoming the eighth Valiant with three steals in a game, the first since
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) on Apr. 21, 2024.
Reyer drove in three runs in both parts of the doubleheader, both games tying her single-game career high. It was the first time since Apr. 20, 2024 against Sarah Lawrence that the shortstop had multiple RBI against the same opponent in both games of a twinbill.
