McCann Breaks Career Win Record in Baseball’s Split Doubleheader

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) earned his eighth win of the season, putting him at 18 victories on the mound for the Valiants, making him the winningest pitcher in program history. The Valiants (26-11, 13-5 SKY) took game one 8-2 before the Panthers (17-16, 10-6 SKY) walked off game two, 3-2.

GAME ONE

McCann remains untouched for the Valiants on the bump, earning his record-setting win, allowing two runs on six hits while retiring seven for just the second time this season.  

Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) started game one at second base, batting in the five-hole. White went 3-for-3, including one ball sent down the line for extra bases. The freshman sent home two runs while scoring three, stealing two bases, and receiving one free bag.

The designated hitter, Aidan Rosario (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), went 2-for-2 on the day with a single and a double. Rosario recorded two RBI while crossing home once. Alex Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) made contact in all three at-bats, sending home one run and crossing the plate once for himself while stealing two bases.

FOURTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 3, PURCHASE 2

Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led off the fourth with a four-pitch walk, followed by stealing second and advancing to third. White sent home Mezzaucella with a single into center.

Rosario singled up the hole before Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) walked to load the bases. On a failed pick-off attempt, Goohs was able to round the bases to third as Rosario and White scored.

Purchase added two runs on a home run.

FIFTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 6, PURCHASE 2

Exarchakis started off the fifth in the manner as the fourth with a walk, followed by a stolen base, Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) walked to put two on. White sent a double down the left field line to score Exarchakis from second. Rosario followed suit with a double to the opposite side of the outfield to score Alberto and White.

SIXTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 7, PURCHASE 2

After getting on with a walk, Peterson scored on a double down the right field line from Exarchakis.

SEVENTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 8, PURCHASE 2

White led off the seventh inning with a single up the middle, stealing second and third base. Peterson laid down a SAC bunt to score White from third.

GAME TWO

After falling behind early on, the Valiants battled back to take a slim 2-1 lead in the seventh inning before failing to complete the comeback victory as Purchase walked off with a two-run infield single.

Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) threw the initial six innings, allowing six hits with one run and retiring two with one looking. The two RBI came from Scott Ennist Jr. (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East). Ennist grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score Mezzaucella for the first run to avoid the shutout. The next batter, Goohs, sent a sacrifice fly out to the centerfielder to score Alberto.

Up Next – The Valiants head into the final series of the regular season, facing Merchant Marine on senior day this upcoming Saturday, May 2.
