GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Manhattanville University field hockey earned its second consecutive win, 1-0, over Gwynedd Mercy University behind a second quarter goal from Emma Masie (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) on Wednesday afternoon. The Valiants improve to 4-5 while the Griffins (0-8) remain winless.
Masie recorded her second goal of the season receiving a high pass from Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and sending the ricocheted ball into the back of the cage. Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) wrapped up her career-best week with three saves, earning her sixth career shutout. Â
Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded her third game in just as many days with a goal, scoring two in the final 15 minutes of play. Â
The Griffins held the ball on offensive for the majority of the fourth quarter. Just one minute into the final 15, Doherty posted back-to-back cross-cage saves halting the best chance of the game for the home team.
Adriana Ingegneri (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and Julia Huertas (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) held down the back of the defensive diamond shutting down three threats on cage in the second half of play.
Guinan added on cushion to the lead by finding her way around the keeper after a scramble in front of the cage. Doherty presented herself to be a threat within the circle shutting down four penalty corners within less than two minutes.
Guinan found the back of the goal for a second time in the final quarter off a pass in the middle of the circle turned into a completed send to the back right corner.
