MADISON, N.J. – Manhattanville University men's soccer came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Drew University (0-1-1) on Sunday, putting the Valiants at a 1-0-2 record.
Just 4:17 minutes into the match,
Nickolas Pagan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) found the back of the net, finishing low to the right off an assist from
Alec Pineda (Yonkers, N.Y./Port Chester) to give the Valiants an early 1-0 advantage.
Manhattanville continued to shake the Rangers throughout the first half.
Alex Rojas (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) forced Drew goalkeeper Donovan Friedhoff into a save in the 21
st minute while
Marco Palushaj (Northville, Mich./Northville) and
Kyle Knussman (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) aslo recorded attempts before halftime. The Valiants carried their 1-0 lead into the break.
The Rangers sought to make a goal after halftime, but
Dwayne Brown II (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and the Valiant defense kept them off the board.
Manhattanville's attack picked up again midway through the second half. Rojas put another attempt on frame in the 61
st minute, followed by shots from
Emanuele Ricci (Como, Italy/Liceo Orsoline Dedalo Como),
Marco Palushaj (Northville, Mich./Northville), and
Alex Guevara (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas).
After
Roberto Velasquez-Osorio (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) had a penalty kick saved in the 76
th minute, he buried Manhattanville's second goal, with Palushaj and Ricci both credited with assists, extending the advantage 2-0.
The Ranger's refused to go quietly, cutting the Valiants' lead advantage in half in the 81
st minute with a goal by Matt Munoz.
Manhattanville's defense held firm over the final ten minutes of the game, closing out the 2-1 victory.
