Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What is your coaching philosophy (style of play, player commitment, etc.)?
The most successful teams are comprised of people who are on the same page in terms of commitment, dedication, and goals. Character has always been my number one recruiting criteria. We want unselfish, team-oriented players. We look for players who are committed to team success, and who recognize the level of dedication required to accomplish it.

What advice would you give to a high school student-athlete who wishes to play college field hockey?
The first thing you need to do if you are looking to pursue field hockey in college is assess what you are hoping to get out of it. Are you most concerned with finding a team that will be successful? Is it more about personal accomplishment? Are you mostly looking to stay active and have fun? Being realistic about what type of program you are looking for, and what level you are capable of playing at, will help you make a better decision. Take the time to get familiar with the coaches and players at a school and find out what their priorities are. Doing this will help you find the type of program that is best for you.

That said, playing college sports is an amazing experience! There is nothing else like it.

Are tutors or study hall available for the athletes?
Through the library student-athletes can get professional tutors or peer tutors in any course subject. Anyone on the team with a GPA below a 3.2 must put in 4 hours of study table per week. All newcomers are in study hall the first semester on campus and/or until they get a 3.2 GPA or better. We also hold weekly academic monitoring meeting with each member of the team.

We construct our schedule in a way that minimizes schedule conflicts between academics and athletics. Any conflicts that do arise can usually be anticipated and addressed well before they become a problem. In the event that problems do arise, we have an academic coordinator in the athletic department who works with professors and department chairs to resolve them.

What are the average academic and athletic commitments during the field hockey season?
Average # of practice hours per day: 2
Average # of class hours per day: 4
Average # of games per week: 2
Average # of class days missed during the season: 4.5
Other commitments: weight training 2x per week – 1 hour sessions

Does the Manhattanville College Field Hockey program offer off-season during the spring?
Yes, we do. As a Division III school we are allowed a five-week training period in which we are allowed to coach them. During that five-week period we train three times per week and scrimmage other teams at one of the “Play Days” offered in the area.
