Tian Tang joined the Manhattanville College women’s basketball coaching staff in May 2022.
Tang brings more than six years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school level to the Manhattanville staff. He most recently served as the interim head coach of the City College of New York’s women’s basketball program for the 2021-22 season, becoming the first Chinese-native basketball head coach in NCAA history.
Prior to joining CCNY, Tang served as an assistant coach at multiple NCAA institutions starting in 2016, including a pair of stints at Skyline Conference programs. Tang began his collegiate coaching journey as an assistant coach for the College of Mount Saint Vincent men’s basketball program in the 2016-17 season. The following season, he transitioned to the women’s game, serving as an assistant coach for the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team for the 2017-18 campaign. Tang was back in the Skyline the following season as an assistant men’s basketball coach with Sarah Lawrence. In the 2019-20 season, Tang served as a graduate assistant with the Division II St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s basketball team as the Spartans won the ECC Championship and earned a No. 11 national ranking.
After his season with St. Thomas Aquinas, Tang worked as the Boys Basketball Associate Head Coach at Ethical Culture Fieldston School in Riverdale from September 2020 to September 2021. Tang assisted the coaching staff with skill development, virtual study session, offensive scheme implementation, recruiting and social media presence. Tang was also a substitute teacher and proctor at Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Tang then went on to work as a physical education teacher at the French American School of New York in Mamaroneck for the 2021-22 school year.
Following the conclusion of the CCNY basketball season, Tang began working at Mercy College in April 2022 as a Student Services Support Center Coordinator, where he assists in review of transcripts, transfer credit audits and outreach efforts.
Tang is familiar with Kennedy Gymnasium, having played on the hardwood for the Valiants from 2013 to 2015. He spent his freshman season at NYU-Poly before transferring to Manhattanville to complete his degree in Business Management and a minor in Sports Studies and Film Studies. Tang would earn two more degrees from Manhattanville, earning a Master’s in Sports Business Management in 2017 and Marketing Communication Management in 2020.
