Dr. Amy Bass

A long-standing supporter of Valiant Athletics and Chair of Manhattanville's Division of Social Science & Communication, Dr. Amy Bass was officially named Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for the Manhattanville College Department of Athletics and Recreation ahead of the start of the 2023-24 academic year.

Dr. Bass succeeds Dr. Lawson Bowling in the role of FAR after Dr. Bowling announced his retirement from the position in the spring following more than two decades serving with the department.

In the role of FAR, Dr. Bass will serve as the liaison between the Athletic and Academic departments at Manhattanville, helping to ensure a quality student-athlete experience and promote student-athlete well-being. Additionally, Dr. Bass will serve as a representative of Manhattanville in both conference and NCAA affairs.

Dr. Bass has been a member of the Valiant community since 2019, when she joined the college as a professor of sports studies ahead of the fall semester. At the conclusion of the 2019-2020 academic year, the dean named her Chair of the Division of Social Science and Communication, which includes sport studies, psychology, digital media, communication, sociology, and women’s and gender studies.

Dr. Bass began expanding her role in Manhattanville Athletics last year as she helped establish the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Chi Alpha Sigma national collegiate athlete honor society. This past March, the Valiants inducted 62 student-athletes into the inaugural class of Chi Alpha Sigma, honoring and recognizing the academic successes of Manhattanville’s student athletes that earned a cumulative GPA of a 3.40 or higher as juniors and seniors.

Outside of Manhattanville, Dr. Bass has authored four books, including the bestselling soccer story “One Goal”, which was named a best book of 2018 by Library Journal and the Boston Globe. Dr. Bass served as a research consultant with NBC Olympics for eight Olympic Games, winning an Emmy for live event turnaround at the 2012 London Games.

Dr. Bass serves as a contributor to Northeast Public Radio, a member of NPR and affiliate of Public Radio International, where she provides commentary on the landscape of sports, frequently sharing stories of the Valiant student-athletes she teaches and cheers on in competition. Dr. Bass is also a frequent contributor of opinion pieces to CNN.
