JAMAICA, N.Y.
– Junior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) led all players with 10 kills and didn't record an error in leading the Manhattanville women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-14) victory over York (N.Y.) College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening at the York College Gym.

Morales had one of the best games of her career against the Cardinals, posting her second career double-digit kill total and converting on 10-of-17 attempts for a stellar .588 hitting percentage. Her 10 kills are the most by a Valiant without an error since current junior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani) had 11 kills versus John Jay College on September 26 of last season and the second-most (behind just Gomes) since the program was re-established in 2007.

Besides Morales, junior Maggie Black (Seattle, Wash.) had a good outing with a match-high 10 digs and six kills, while freshman Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) added five kills and a match-best five service aces. Junior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) added 20 assists and classmate Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn.) also registered seven kills and five assists for the visitors in the win.

As a team, Manhattanville was very efficient on the offensive end, posting a .262 hitting percentage (33 kills and 12 errors on 80 attempts), the team's second-best percentage of the season. Conversely, York was held to .030 hitting and just 10 kills combined in the final two sets.

The first set was up in the air for most of the frame, as no team earned a lead of more than two points until York pulled out to a 15-11 lead. The Valiants did not allow the lead to last long, however, as the visitors promptly went on an 8-1 run to regain the lead at 19-16. The Cardinals got back within a point at 20-19, but three straight Valiant points helped to put away the set and give Manhattanville an early lead.

The Valiants never trailed in the second set, as the squad used a massive 15-4 run to turn an 8-7 advantage into a 23-11 lead. The Valiants recorded eight kills and two aces during the decisive run, all the while hitting .444 (11 kills, three errors) as a team in the frame.

Manhattanville came out strong once again in the third set, using an early 14-2 run to jump out to a 17-7 lead. Morales had four of her five third-set kills during the stretch, which helped to clinch the match for the visitors. After York made a mini-run to get within seven at 21-14, Morales recorded a kill to get the serve back and Black followed with three consecutive kills to put a punctuation mark on the match.

Manhattanville (6-9, 0-4 Freedom) will continue non-conference play this weekend, as the team makes the short trip to Long Island to take part in the Merchant Marine Tri-Match beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the host Mariners. York (4-12, 1-4 CUNYAC) will participate in the Brooklyn College Tri-Match on Monday starting at 9 a.m.
