PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Kaitlyn Olsen led all players with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead Delaware Valley College to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-23) victory over Manhattanville in a Freedom Conference women's volleyball matchup on Wednesday evening at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Olsen posted 12 of Delaware Valley's 41 kills on the evening, as the visitors hit .233 as a team in the victory. The visitors recorded at least 12 kills in each set, including 16 kills and just two errors in a nearly flawless first frame. Manhattanville, meanwhile, managed a combined 11 kills in the first two sets before recording 11 alone in the third set to finish with 22 on the night.
Besides Olsen's 12 kills, senior Amy Scordato added 30 assists and 10 digs for the Aggies, while freshmen Janel Gluch and Destinee Horning contributed nine and eight kills, respectively.
For Manhattanville, junior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) barely missed another triple-double with 11 digs, 11 assists and nine kills, leading the team in all three categories. Freshman Jocelyn Branca (Eastchester, N.Y.) reached double figures in digs with 10, with junior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) also adding six kills on .250 hitting.
The first set was not much of a contest, as Delaware Valley went on an 16-4 run to turn a 9-5 lead into a 25-9 game-one win. Things went similarly to start the second set, as the Aggies jumped out to a 12-7 lead thanks to five straight points on the serve of freshman Jen Keller. Manhattanville fought off four set points late in the frame, but a kill by Gluch on set point number five gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The Valiants came out and showed some fight in the third set, as two kills by freshman Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) helped the team pick up six of the first seven points of the frame to take an early lead. Although Delaware Valley used multiple runs to try and take the lead, the home team continued to fend off the visitors and used a 6-1 run at 16-all to take a 22-17 lead on back-to-back Morales kills. However, the offense went dry for Manhattanville soon after, as DVC countered with six straight points and an 8-1 run to conclude the match and pull out the straight-set win.
Manhattanville (5-6, 0-3 Freedom), which falls below .500 for the first time all season, will look to get its winning record back on Saturday, when the team faces Arcadia University and Alvernia University at the Freedom/Commonwealth Conference Crossover Tournament at Arcadia beginning at 11 a.m. Delaware Valley (6-7, 2-1 Freedom) returns to action tomorrow with a 7 p.m. home match versus Penn State-Berks.
